Missing March

Some of you may have heard by now that I will not be attending the 4th Annual Greater Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament (Jackson, Michigan) on March 3rd, 2018. Never have I imagined missing such a fun tournament, while having a good time with friends, playing the board game that I grew up with, and fell in love with.

Myself, Shawn Baier
The reason for not going is simple, my sister Sara, got engaged over the holidays, and their wedding is projected for August, and in Vermont... which means that my wife Becky and I, have to save every single penny that we possibly can for this wonderful trip, which includes food, gas & hotel. I do plan to hit Cooperstown on the way back, something that has always been on my baseball bucket list.

Once people noticed I backed out, myself and my wife got instant messages from APBA friends, wondering if everything is alright with me; Some were concerned since I have withdrawn from my original Facebook profile, and have seen or heard little from me. For those that are on the APBA Facebook Group and for those that follow this blog, they would know that everything is alright.

Even though the reason of not going was simple, the decision was still tough for me. I always have a good time at these events, and the GMABT is a very special tournament for me, it's in my home state, and it has a great blend of APBA friends, including its gracious host Pastor Rich Zawadzki. Plus I had tons of fun with one year particular (March 2016) when my 1993 Atlanta Braves went all the way to win the GMABT title, with a 11-2 record.

So what does this all mean for my 2018 GMABT selection of the 1997 Baltimore Orioles? Well, obviously they won't be participating in the 2018 GMABT, but that does not mean that I will not use them in a future tournament elsewhere. This team is a underrated APBA gem that could do some serious harm in tournament play... to be honest, I really liked my chances, and feel to not let this team get a shot in the future would be a shame.

So the O's will get their shot at some point...

You can read my post "Odd Birds" that I wrote back on March 13th about my excitement of this team, and what they had to offer as a team.

Sure... I am bummed, but I am really looking forward to watching my only sister getting married to her man, Morgan this upcoming year!

My sister Sara, with her cat, Sufi.
