Mets Lose Again / Game #6 Highlights

Daisuke Matsuzaka tied Mordecai Brown's (1906 Cubs) record of 11 strikeouts in a single-game, while Jason Varitek tied Marty Marion's (1942 Cardinals) record of 3 doubles. Varitek went 4-4, with 2 RBI. The New York Mets remain winless.

After a horrible start against the 84' Tigers last series, Dennis Martinez bounced back with a six-hit shutout of the Kansas City Royals. Carlos Baerga hit 2 HR's & had 3 of the team's 4 RBI's, the other came off a solo HR by Paul Sorrento (his 2nd). U.L. Washington reached safely in all four plate appearances for K.C., going 3-3 (all singles) with a BB.

Both starting pitchers, Tom Glavine (ATL) & Juan Marichal pitched excellent games (each only allowing 1 ER), as Chipper Jones hit HR #2. Andruw Jones' sac fly scored in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.

The Reds' lineup finally woke up with 16 hits, including 3-run HR's by Tony Perez & Dan Driessen. Pete Rose continues to struggle, who is 4-for-25 this season with a .276 on-base percentage -- as Jack Billingham looked solid in his season debut.
