Albert Belle keeps on trucking, as he hit both league-leading HR #11 & #12 in this marathon of 16 innings. Both teams went scoreless for nine innings after a 4-4 tie at the end of the 6th inning. The Pirates led 3-1 until the Tribe scored three runs on three consecutive doubles by Ramirez, Tony Pena & Vizquel. Albert Belle broke the tie during the top of the 16th with his 12th HR. Jose Mesa came in and closed it out for the Indians, as he struck out the side. Bill Mazeroski & Don Hoak each had two-run homers for the Pirates.

The Senators' Goose Goslin drew first blood with a three-run HR in a game that lacked offense from both sides, as the Senators have won three in a row, since losing back-to-back walk-offs to the 76' Dodgers.

1968 Tigers 2 7 2
1929 Cubs 4 5 2 F / 10 Inn
Detroit (6-11) / Chicago (13-4)
The game fell into the hands of the bullpen, as both teams' starting pitchers, Denny McLain (DET) & Charlie Root, had themselves a pitcher's duel. The Tigers led 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, and handed the ball over to Don McMahon, who in turn, turned over a victory game-tying pinch-hit solo HR by one of the Cubs' backup catchers, Earl Grace. It was a game of unlikely heroes, as Johnny Moore (playing LF for the Cubs) got a rare start & hit a walk-off HR off of McMahon in the bottom of the 10th.
For the 1968 Tigers, their unstable bullpen has been their Achilles' Heel for the season, when it should really have been one of the teams' biggest strengths -- leading to many sleepless nights for Manager Mayo Smith.
Rogers Hornsby drew three intentional walks in this game, a league first.

Definitely not Greg Maddux's best game, definitely not his worse -- but he left the game with 5-4 lead, with five hits allowed in seven innings, plus 8 strikeouts. Carl Hubbell, who like Maddux has yet to really play like a Cy Young pitcher, also allowed 4 runs in seven innings.
The two star pitchers' seasons, counting this outing, so far....
- Greg Maddux: 1-3, 4.78 ERA, CG, SHO, 24 H, 25 K & 10 BB in 32 innings.
- Carl Hubbell: 1-2, 4.50 ERA, 32 H, 16 K & 9 BB in 30 innings.

Vida Blue pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing only three hits -- but it wasn't enough as Rollie Fingers blows the save, and allows the Red Sox to take it to 14 innings. Eric Hinske hits a three-run triple during the top of the 14th, after going 0-for-16 in his first 16 at-bats of the season. Jonathan Papelbon strikes out the Athletics 1-2-3 for his fourth save. The loss for the Athletics, snaps their five-game winning-streak.

Gaylord Perry made his first win a memorable one. His bid for a no-hitter was broke up in the 6th inning by Mike Gazella, while his shutout got broke up during the top of the ninth with a two-run HR by Earle Combs & a solo by Babe Ruth; Giants stuck with him to finish with a complete game. Hal Lanier entered the game 0-for-24 during the season, he would be the team's offensive star, going 2-for-3, HR, double & 3 RBI.
