"Straw Man" Lifts Yankees over Mets in Extras!

(Game #18's)

Strawberry has been heating up for 98' Yankees.

1998 Yankees     7   13   1
1969 Mets          5     9    2     F / 13 Inn

N.Y. Yankees (13-5) / N.Y. Mets (6-12)

WP- Lloyd (2-0)
LP- McAndrew (0-1)
SV- Mendoza (1)

The Yankees entered the bottom of the 9th, up 4-0 -- David Wells was cruising through 8 innings of shutout ball, and was in a little too long as he allowed a two-run HR to Art Shamsky. The Yankees brought in Mariano Rivera with no outs to try and keep the Yankees in position to win, and would allow a game-tying two-run HR to Kenneth Boswell.

Mariano Rivera may have 6 saves this season, but he has been anything but sharp so far, allowing 6 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings for a lousy 6.23 ERA.

Jorge Posada hit his 7th HR of the season in the top of the 10th for the Yankees to momentarily take back the lead, until the Mets' Cleon Jones hit a triple in the bottom of the inning to drive in Donn Clendenon to tie it up, once again; The Yankees were fortunate to strike out the following batter in Shamsky & to get Ed Kranepool to ground out.

The Yankees would have Darryl Strawberry pinch-hit for Graeme Lloyd (the pitcher), which resulted in a two-run HR in the top of the 13th. It was Strawberry's 2nd HR in as many games, and the Straw Man's 3rd in 5 games -- bringing his total to 4 HR's for the season.

The 1998 Yankees & 1969 Mets met in the first round of my APBA Tournament of Champions, the Yankees were the #1 team (#2 overall) in the Cobb Brackett, while the Mets were #16 (#63 overall out of 64 teams); the Mets pulled off the upset 3-games-to-1. The Yankees now winning the first two games of their Crazy 48's series against the same Mets, are now 3-3 lifetime in my APBA leagues play.

1912 Red Sox   5    8    0
1983 Orioles     3   10   0    F

Boston (12-6) / Baltimore (7-11)

WP- B.O'Brien (5-0)
LP- S.Davis (1-2)
SV- C.Hall (5)

Boston's Tris Speaker hit a two-run double in the 7th that would later be key with the Orioles' Rick Dempsey & Lenn Sakata hitting HR's to shorten the gap between the two teams.

                         R   H   E
1904 Giants     3    5    0
1980 Royals    7    8    0     F

New York (12-6) / Kansas City (7-11)

WP- De.Leonard (2-2)
LP- McGinnity (3-2)/ CG (4)

The Royals snap a five-game losing streak, as Dennis Leonard kept the Royals in the game with timely clutch pitching through eight innings, despite his seven walks. Willie Aikens hit a solo HR, while Darrell Porter hit a three-run HR in the bottom of the 8th.

                          R   H   E
1946 Red Sox   6    8    0
1981 Expos       3    7    2     F

Boston (5-13) / Montreal (8-10)

WP- Hughson (2-2)
LP- Gullickson (1-2)
SV- M.Brown (1)

Bill Gullickson stayed an inning too long, trying to give the bullpen a little break, as he allowed three of his six earned runs/runs during the top of the ninth, as Johnny Pesky hit a three-run double to break the 3-3 tie. Ted Williams who has been playing a lot better, hitting in the lead-off spot, hit his 2nd HR of the season, lifted his average up to .279 & is now 2nd on the club in total bases behind Dom DiMaggio. Tim Raines stole his 20th base (leading all players in the Crazy 48's).

The Red Sox, who entered the game with the league's worst record at 4-13, snap a six-game losing streak.

The Dean Brothers: "Daffy" & "Dizzy"

                           R   H   E
1969 Orioles      2    7    2
1934 Cardinals  3   11   0    F

Baltimore (7-11) / St. Louis (10-8)

WP- P.Dean (2-2)
LP- McNally (1-4)
SV- Haines (3)

The Cardinals would love to see more of Joe Medwick having performances like today, going 3-for-4, double & 2 RBI -- as he has struggled throughout the season, he lifted his average up to .224 & has yet to hit a home run. For the Orioles, it has been the 6th straight game that the O's fell victim to the other team.

The Dean brothers now have 6 of the Cards' 10 victories.

                           R   H   E
1912 Giants       17  18   1
1962 Dodgers     0    2    2   F

New York (10-8) / Los Angeles (5-13)

WP- Marquard (1-3)/ CG (1)/ SHO (1)
LP- Koufax (0-3)

The New York Giants tied the league record of 17 runs in a single-game set by the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, and set the game record for biggest winning margin of 17 runs. The game may go down so far as the biggest lop-sided victory in Crazy 48's history as of yet. Many players for the Giants would get their shots in, but Larry Doyle was the player who shined the most, hitting two HR's, going 4-for-5, BB & 6 RBI. Doyle now has 5 HR's for the season, with 20 RBI; in real life he had a total of 10 HR's in 558 AB's.

The 1962 Dodgers have now been outscored 30-3 in the first two games of the series, and have been outscored by the league for 44 runs (a league worst)! The team is batting only .215, while the pitching has a horrible ERA of 5.97.

                            R   H   E
1942 Cardinals   7    11   1
1993 Phillies       5    7    2     F  / 11 Inn

St. Louis (10-8) / Philadelphia (8-10)

WP- E.White (2-1)
LP- L.Andersen (1-1)
SV- Krist (1)

The Cards will probably think twice next time of taking Johnny Beazley out of the game after five shutout innings, as the bullpen blew the lead and almost the game. Terry Moore's two-run single (fourth hit of the game) in the eleventh would be clutch for St.Louis. The Phillies' Jim Eisenreich's three-run double would kick-off Philadelphia's comeback bid.

Enos Slaughter has been on fire lately, following his two-HR game up with a two-hit, four RBI performance that gives him a total of 9 RBI in just 2 games.

                            R   H   E
1986 Mets          1    5    0
1925 Senators    4    6    0     F

New York (5-13) / Washington (8-10)

WP- W.Johnson (4-0)
LP- Darling (0-4)
SV- Marberry (7)

The Senators win their fourth straight game, as Walter Johnson gets win #4, allowing only four hits & an earned run through seven innings. Ossie Bluege had a two-run double for the Senators.
