Padres, Hitchcock Quiets Mets.

Tony Gwynn went 2-for-4, with two singles, including one clutch two-run single in the bottom of the 7th, while Sterling Hitchcock was in the zone, allowing only one hit, no runs -- while striking out 11 batters in 7 innings. Hitchcock, now has 27 strikeouts for the season, and is among the top in the league in strikeouts.

Seattle (11-5) / St. Louis (8-8)

The Mariners tied it up in the top of the 6th, 5-5; it was the team's bullpen that actually let Seattle down for once, as Ryan Franklin allowed a four-run inning, including a two-run HR by Edwin Dusak. Dusak got a rare start for the Cards, and fell a double short of the cycle.

The old-school 71' team (dawn of a future dynasty) wins their fifth in a row, as they swept the "Moneyball" Athletics. Coo Coo Blefary went 3-for-4 (playing DH) with a HR & 4 RBI for the night, while Diego Segui pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with 5 K's.

Three HR's for the Jays, including Ernie Whitt's two-run HR that gave the Jays' bullpen a little breathing room. For Willie Upshaw, it's a team lead of 4 HR's for the season.

Jimmie Foxx put the game away early by hitting a grand slam in the third inning, while Waite Hoyt pitches eight solid innings, allowing only a solo HR to the Tigers' Don Wert.

Back & forth early with plenty of hits, the Braves then were out to a 9-4 lead after 6 innings, but not without the Royals going out quietly. Willie Wilson for the Royals, tied a league record of four runs in a game. Braves finish off the sweep of K.C.
