M's Sweep 31' A's, Crawfords Next

All came down to pitching, not much offense. The Mariners got their two runs from a Waite Hoyt balk (scoring in Boone), while Boone added an RBI double during the bottom of the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead that stuck. Mariners' superior bullpen took over in the 6th. Next series is a big one for the Mariners as the M's 18-6 record will clash with play the Negro League powerhouse Pittsburgh Crawfords, for one of the best anticipated series in the early season -- A battle between the best two records in the Crazy 48's!

Dick Bartell tied a league record of four runs scored, while he also hit 2 HR's with 3 RBI. Frank Howard brought the game closer with a three-run homer during the bottom of the 8th Inning. The Dodgers have now lost three straight after winning the series opener.

Willie Wilson tied Tris Speaker, Roberto Clemente, Johnny McCarthy & Angel Mangual with a league record of 5 hits in a single ball game; Speaker did it twice already. Wilson was a perfect 5-for-5 during his first 5 at-bats, but flied out going for the possible record 6th hit. George Brett also had a big game, going 3-for-5, with 2 HR's & 5 RBI. Sal Bando was the star for Oakland, going 2-for-4, with a three-run HR, plus RBI double.

The Athletics got swept for the 2nd time in three series, as they lose a close one to the Boston Red Sox. Hick Cady went 2-for-4 with a double, as Charlie Hall comes in & closes down the game with a three-inning save (capturing his 6th for the season).

The Red Sox follow their sweep of the 1971 Athletics, by getting swept by the hot Washington Senators. The Senators have won 8 of their last 9 games! Joe Judge led the charge for Washington going 3-for-3, 2 doubles, a single & a bases-on-balls + ribbie. David Ortiz ("Big Papi") went yard for the 2nd consecutive game, for homer #4.
