SV- M.Rivera (6)

Bernie Williams finally had a big game, falling a HR short of the cycle, with a run scored & 3 RBI in four at-bats, while Darryl Strawberry came up big in the DH role with two solo HR's & a single -- as the Yankees win a battle of two great Bombers teams. Bernie's big day makes him the fourth Yankee already with at least 10 RBI's (he has 11) for the season, along with Jorge Posada (13), Paul O'Neill (10) & Tino Martinez (10).

The starting pitchers of the 1998 New York Yankees have a combined record of 8-0 during their first 13 games.

Chicago (9-4) / New York (4-9)

WP- Gooden (1-1)/ CG (1)/ SHO (1)

Mookie Wilson went 2-for-3 with a solo HR & two runs, while Keith Hernandez had a two-run single in the first as Doc Gooden was in complete control -- allowing only four hits from the Cubbies (two of those hits from Johnny Evers). Gooden gives the Mets' bullpen a much-needed rest.

Texas (7-6) / St. Louis (5-8)

WP- Helling (2-1)
LP- Kramer (1-1)
SV- Wetteland (3)

Rick Helling had another quality start, allowing only 2 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings, allowing six hits & a walk while striking out four Browns. Mark McLemore got things started out of the gate with a lead-off solo home run, while Juan Gonzalez added a ribbie with a 3-for-4 performance. Alex Zarilla and Mark Christman of the Browns had four of the team's seven hits.

WP- D.Dean (3-0)/ CG (3)
LP- Drysdale (1-1)

The Dodgers had no answers for Dizzy Dean, then any one of the teams that have played him, have had any answers as well; Dean pitched his third complete game of the season, bringing his record to 3-0 with a ERA of 0.79 & 26 K's in 35 innings! This game was a two-hit performance that included seven K's.

Rip Collins went 2-for-4, with 3 runs, a triple, double & RBI for the Cards.

LP- Blass (1-2)

The Cubs' Kiki Cuyler got his first RBI of the season with a solo HR in the first inning, going 2-for-4 -- all while Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown did his usual dominance for the season, another complete game, a four-hit, 10 K shutout of a performance. Rennie Stennett had two of the Pirates' four hits.

                            R   H   E
1917 White Sox   8   15   0
1983 Orioles        4   10   0    F

Chicago (8-5) / Baltimore (5-8)

WP- Cicotte (1-2)
LP- McGregor (1-3)

The White Sox, for the first time in the season got to use the Designated Hitter since they are playing at Baltimore for the first two games of the series. Manager Pants Rowland decided to give some regulars a day off and decided to do a little experiment by playing relief pitcher Reb Russell (who's a good-hitting pitcher) at DH, the experiment paid off as he went 2-for-4 with a double, triple & 3 RBI.

Eddie Cicotte had his second straight decent outing of the season (lowering his ERA to 4.61), as the Chicago White Sox have now won 7 of their last 8 games.

  1. Shawn, you belong in the APBA Hall of Fame. What a great website. I will be checking from time to time even if I don't leave comments. 1929 Cubs one of my favorite GTOP clubs, had them with the old long envelope edition in one of my GTOP leagues, they went 29-19 and almost overtook the 1911 Giants (30-18) in the last series.
