The Reds have been playing much better as of late (winning 4 of their last 5 games), and have got to be happy get a win against Christy "The Big Six" Mathewson. Tony Perez has shown no signs of slowing down, batting .412, 6 HR, 17 RBI with 6 doubles -- giving him a .882 slugging percentage! He would hit his 6th HR & double in this one against the Giants, with 3 RBI. Ken Griffey hit his first HR of the season, as Joe Morgan hit a double & triple. Fred Snodgrass had three hits in a losing cause for New York.

It's safe to say that Christy Mathewson didn't have his best stuff today -- The Tigers will take that, as they feel they stole a game here, and got a much needed win. Alan Trammell snapped out of his drought momentarily, going 2-for-5 with 2 RBI (including a triple & steal), while Dave Bergman added a solo HR and two runs. Morris pitches a strong quality start, holding the Giants to seven hits.
The Tigers snapped the Giants' 8 game winning-streak.

The 1937 Yankees' lineup was rolling, led by George Selkirk's 3-for-5 performance, with a HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs & a steal. Myril Hoag also had three hits, with a triple, 3 runs & 2 RBI -- with Joe DiMaggio quietly hitting his 6th HR of the season, plus a HR from Frank Crosetti. The Braves' Andruw Jones momentarily tied the game up with a two-run HR during the bottom of the 4th, making it 6-6 -- but the Yankees once again pulled away.
The Braves suffer a big loss in the injury to Weiss, who was batting .407 in 27 at-bats for the Braves this season.

A battle between the tribes, as each of the game's three runs were all home runs. 1995's Jim Thome, the first batter up during the bottom of the 8th, hit a solo HR off Bob Lemon -- breaking up Lemon's no-no; while the 54' Indians had solo HR's from Wally Westlake & Al Smith.

Dave Duncan easily had his best game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a HR & double that included 5 ribbies. Vida Blue had a second consecutive great outing, with a complete game that had 10 K's & only allowing one run & two hits -- lowering his ERA to 3.90.

The Giants are once again rolling, now that Robby Thompson has been back from injury; the team really struggled with his absence and now have won four in a row, now that he's been back. Thompson is batting .423, with 3 HR & 8 RBI in 7 games (26 AB's) this season, Thompson would fall a triple short of the cycle in this one against Pittsburgh, he would add three RBI as well. The Giants also got some unexpected offense from Darren Lewis (double, triple & two runs). Bill Virdon (struggling all year) went 2-for-4, HR & 2 RBI in the Bucs' losing effort.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, they have lost a league record eight consecutive losses, and have lost 9 of their last 10 games after a 3-0 season start.
