The Athletics decided to give some much need rest off to Tommy Davis & Rick Monday, and started Angel Mangual at lead-off, in which he answered with 5 hits, tying the league record (most hits in a single game) with Tris Speaker (12' BOS) & Johnny McCarthy (37' NYG). Oakland's Mike Epstein also hit a two-run HR, while Boston's Harry Hooper had three hits.

Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle each hit Grand Slams, for Mantle it was his first HR of the season, while Berra tied the league record of 7 RBI's in a single-game with Darren Daulton (93' PHI) & Will Clark (93' SF); Johnny Sain improves to 3-0, as he's the only Yankee starting pitcher with any victories.

Al Simmons is slowly starting to heat up finally, as he had a second-straight game with a home run. Athletic relievers Jim McDonald & Eddie Rommell hold off the rallying Cardinals, as A's avoid the sweep.

A two-run HR by Rip Collins at the top of the 12th decided this one, while Ted Williams got two hits batting lead-off. Williams has struggled all season, as the Red Sox hope that Williams might finally break out of his slope -- despite the team's lousy 4-8 record & Pinky Higgins still out (for awhile on the disabled list), Boston is only 3 games out of first in their division.

The Mets owned a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth until Mets starting pitcher Don Cardwell came unraveled. "Turkey Mike" Donlin and Sam Mertes each had three hits, while the Mets' Tommie Agee finally did something with the bat, smacking a HR with 2 runs & 2 RBI.
