The Tale of Two Dickeys

Now.. now.. let's keep it mature fellas...

I am of course speaking of the knuckle-baller R.A. Dickey.

In my Boys of Summer APBA Baseball League (APBA Baseball for Windows), my Traverse City Panthers acquired R.A. from the South Side Spartans in exchange for a 2019 6th Round Draft Pick. I paid a little hefty for a guy who is pretty-much retired, but he will be of big help with the innings he still has in the tank & his Grade C upgrades the back-half of my rotation.

At the time of the trade, my Panthers currently own the league's best record 76-35 (.685). We have been excellent at home (39-12 / .765 pct), while winning many one-run games (22-7 / .759 pct) and going 10-4 in extras.

We also added some relief depth in Craig Stammen & lefty Jerry Blevins, who both had productive years in the majors during the 2017 MLB Season.

The back-end of the rotation & pen depth were my only concerns going down the stretch, and all it cost me was draft picks and reliever Micheal Lorenzen.

In the Ultimate APBA League (UAL) which I joined earlier this summer, my team the Traverse City Fighting Tigers, made their first trade by trading away R.A. Dickey to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for outfielder Keon Broxton. The league also uses real-life salaries and salary caps, so by trading away Dickey, I am also shedding $7.0 million in the trade (Dickey $7.5 / Broxton $0.5), my team happened to be $7.4 over the cap, so now I am only $0.4 million over the cap. Both players will provide their teams as decent one-year rentals for their ball clubs. Broxton is not much, but he will serve a better purpose for my team than Dickey would have, I needed one more outfielder to add to its depth, he batted only .220, but he has 20+ HR & 20+ steals... so say hello to pinch duties there, Keon.

I also have a player to cut before the roster cuts deadline (August 22nd). We can have 29-32 players on our main roster, while keeping as many non-carded XC's.

By the way, I ended up going with Traverse City Fighting Tigers, due to the fact there was another team named the Tigers in the opposite league. I will also be using the logo that I used for the Traverse City Tigers during my Mid-West Winter Baseball days.

MWWL Tigers' Series Opener & Changes

T.C. Tigers: Strengthening their stripes for long haul.
The Mid-West Winter League (MWWL) started its 1990 Season this week, for all of you who may not know, the MWWL is the winter-league brother to John "Stray" Corrado's Mid-West Baseball League (MWBL). The MWWL has 20 teams total, with two leagues -- both leagues having two divisions each of five teams each.

My Traverse City Tigers won the A.L. West in 1988, almost two seasons ago, the script switched last season with the Mexico City Chihuahuas & Detroit Stars doing numerous deals in the off-season (entering 1989) that left the Tigers in the dust -- the Tigers made two deals; Trading Tim Raines to the Steel City Sluggers for Harold Baines & trading Doug Jones off to the Manhattan Gas Hornets for a #1 Draft Pick.

I regretted trading Jones almost immediately, part of my draft strategy, in drafting John Wettleland (and reliever Scott Belinda) was to form a deep bullpen -- otherwise I may have drafted Marquis Grissom or one of the starting pitchers in Kenny Rogers, Kevin Tapani & Wilson Alvarez, which starting pitching has become a problem for me.

Here is my opening series at home against the Detroit Stars, seven games.

GAME #1
DETROIT 2, TRAVERSE CITY 1

Jack Daugherty hits a clutch solo HR in the top of the 7th, to help seal the victory for the Stars. Ed Whitson gets the win, allowing only 3 hits & a run in 7 innings of work. Greg Maddux pitched good in a losing effort, allowing 2 ER's & 6 hits in 6.1, with 4 K's.

Daugherty went 2-for-3, HR, RBI.

GAME #2
DETROIT 5, TRAVERSE CITY 2

Another strong start by a Tiger starting pitcher -- This time in Jack McDowell, who went 7.1 innings, allowing only 3 hits, ER, with 4 K's. Charlie Hough was all over the place for Tigers, and had to be pulled 4.2 innings through with an injury (Out for 5 days).

Johnny Ray went 3-for-4, with a two-run double for T.C.; while Jack Daugherty added 2 more hits & a run for Detroit. Craig Lefferts locks down his first Save.

GAME #3
TRAVERSE CITY 7, DETROIT 4

T.C. jumped to 5-0 start after 2 innings -- but Detroit does everything they can in an attempt of a comeback.

Harold Baines hit his 1st HR of the season, while Paul Molitor went 3-for-4, with 3 RBI & a run. Joe Carter and Lance Johnson added 2 hits for the Tigers.

Melido Perez was a mess for Detroit, allowing 7 hits & 5 runs in 1.2 innings. Eric King, on the other hand, for T.C. was good, allowing 7 hits & 2 ER's in 6 innings -- getting the win. Stan Belinda collects his 1st Save of the season.

GAME #4
TRAVERSE CITY 4, DETROIT 3

In his very first at-bat in the Mid-West Winter League, Travis Fryman sends a two-run HR over the center field wall; Fryman was the 2nd Overall pick taken in the 1990 MWWL Draft behind Germantown's Frank Thomas.

Paul Molitor added 2 more RBI (5 for the season) & Joe Carter got his 4th double of the season.

Lance Johnson likes doing everything in 3's with 3 runs, 3 hits & 3 stolen bases. The game was 3-3 with Johnson on first, he stole second & third -- setting up Molitor to hit the walk-off single off of Rob Dibble.

John Kruk hit a two-run HR in a losing effort. Dibble gets the loss, while Joe Boever gets the win.

Whitson was automatic for the Detroit Stars.

GAME #5
DETROIT 3, TRAVERSE CITY 1

Paul Molitor earned a day off for his game-winner the night before, while his replacement Travis Fryman went 3-for-4, with another HR, this one a solo shot -- but that would be Tigers' only run.

Ed Whitson pitched another solid game, he is now 2-0, with a 1.29 ERA -- he allowed a few more hits than last game with 7, allowing only one earned run in 7.1 innings. Craig Lefferts logs his 2nd Save. David West gets the loss for the Tigers.

No scoring happened for either team after the 3rd inning.

GAME #6
TRAVERSE CITY 5, DETROIT 4

The Detroit Stars outhit the Tigers 11-6, with John Kruk going 3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI & a run. Jack Daugherty added two more hits, and is batting .400 for the Stars. Vets Dave Parker & Brett Butler also had two hits each for Detroit.

Greg Maddux pitched another good game, and seemed to escape trouble whenever trouble was brewing -- going 6.2 innings, allowing 8 hits & a run, with 6 K's; Maddux is now 1-1, with a 2.08 ERA in two starts.

Brad Arnsberg almost gift-wrapped the game to Detroit, until newly-acquired Norm Charlton (acquired in the Jose Rijo trade) came in and saved the day, for his 1st Save of the season.

Greg Brock and rookie Sandy Alomar, Jr. hit HR's for T.C.

GAME #7
DETROIT 6, TRAVERSE CITY 3

Melido Perez was much more effective in this start for Detroit, allowing 6 hits & 3 ER's in 7 innings, with 4 K's. John Wettleland (starting for the injured Charlie Hough) was lousy, allowing 8 hits & 6 ER's, with 3 BB's in only 3.1 innings!

Julio Franco had 3 hits, while Vince Coleman went 2-for-4, with 3 RBI & a steal for Detroit. Rob Dibble got his 2nd Save, tying teammate Craig Lefferts.

Mel Hall went 2-for-4, with a HR & 2 RBI for the Tigers.

The Detroit Stars win the series, just edging the Tigers 4-3 -- in a fun series.

Entering 1990 / The Off-Season

Here is a quick look at the off-season changes for my Tigers...
Molitor: The Tigers' offensive anchor.

PLAYERS RETURNING
C - Sandy Alomar, Jr.
1B- Greg Brock
2B - Johnny Ray
3B+ - Paul Molitor
SS+ - Felix Fermin
SS - Bill Spiers
OF+ - Joe Carter
OF- Lance Johnson
DH/OF - Harold Baines
OF- Dante Bichette
SP- Greg Maddux
SP- Charlie Hough
SP- Eric King
SP- Neal Heaton
P- Luis Aquino
P- John Wetteland
RP- Stan Belinda
RP- Juan Agosto
RP- Terry Leach
RP- Brad Arnsberg

For the most part, Alomar, Heaton & Belinda are newcomers to the team -- Alomar & Belinda barely played in 1989, and Neal Heaton was acquired in a trade for reliever Ken Dayley just before the trade deadline during the season.

Boone was Tigers' starting backstop from 1988-1989.

DEPARTURES
C- Bob Boone
C+- Jody Davis
C+- Phil Lombardi
C- Rick Dempsey
1B- Pete O'Brien
2B+- Brad Wellman
2B+- Rene Gonzales
OF - Cecil Espy
OF- Thad Bosley
OF- Henry Cotto
OF- Stan Jefferson
OF- Claudell Washington
OF- Joel Youngblood
P- Brian Holton
SP- Andy Hawkins
SP- Dave Schmidt
SP- Walt Terrell

The MWWL has a great way of keeping & releasing players, the worst you are, the more players you keep, the better you are, the less. I had no problem releasing any of these players, the only one that came closest was Pete O'Brien -- since my first base depth is bad; O'Brien was acquired during my playoff push in the 1998 season. Funny thing is that I own Joel Youngblood on my NXPL 1981 Detroit Tigers.
Fryman: Wearing a familiar-looking uniform in T.C.

1990 DRAFT (*-non-rookie free agents)
3B+- Travis Fryman
1B+- Jeff Conine
2B- Mickey Morandini
1B- Ricky Jordan*
C- Greg Myers*
RP- Joe Boever*
P- Wally Whitehurst
OF- Mel Hall*
P- David West*
C- Damon Berryhill*
2B+- Luis Sojo
OF-Wes Chamberlain
P- Dave Burba
P- Alan Mills
3B/1B- Scott Cooper
3B+- Craig Wilson*

With the addition of Travis Fryman to the team, means Molitor's days at third base are numbered. The plan is to move Molitor to first base, until Jeff Conine or whoever is ready by 1993. Joe Carter may have to be trade bait -- hit 151 HR's & 566 RBI from 1990-1994; Carter's defense will be decreasing, and with no room at first with Molitor taking over there in the next season or two -- plus the fact that Harold Baines will be constant DH for years to come, that leaves Carter out of options for the Tigers' future.
Rijo was sent packing to Montana.

OFF-SEASON (Post-DRAFT) TRADE
The Tigers traded starting pitcher Jose Rijo, (who will be solid through 1994) to the Montana Cutthroats in exchange for starting pitcher Ken Hill & reliever Norm Charlton; plus an exchange of draft picks between the two franchises, and the Tigers tossed in Dale Sveum for the even-players rule for in-season dealings. Rijo & Greg Maddux made a nasty, 1-2 combination at the top of my rotation, the only problem is that we had nothing on the horizon; Hill may not have been anywhere as good as Rijo, but he puts up respectable numbers from 1991-1997, in which Rijo hits the wall in 1994. With my team not where I wanted it to be, it made Rijo dispensible for the Tigers -- in which Hill would by us time, have a longer duration with the team, plus adding a reliever in Charlton that will tighten up my bullpen. Joe Carter may be able to bring in another starting pitcher, and then the next couple drafts will make a more solid rotation -- the bullpen will be coming around much quicker than the rotation.

It's going to be interesting to see how and where the 1990 MWWL Season takes my Traverse City Tigers, if all go right, the team should be a powerhouse no later than the mid-1990's, even with the league expanding in 1993.

1989 MWWL Regular Season Comes to End

The regular season of the Mid-West Winter League has come to an end. It could have not come any sooner for my poor Traverse City Tigers who crashed from first to last over the 1989 season; Going from 96-66 to 56-106 -- a forty game difference!

Enough about my team for now (that's for another post), The Fort Worth Panthers won the American League East from last year's World Champions, the Chicago Demolition. Last season, the Demolition won the division by 40 games, this year they will still go to the playoffs as one of the A.L. Wild Card teams, with a 105-57 record. The Panthers won the east by 7 games, going 112-50. The Demolition will be shooting for their 3rd World Title in four years, they won it all in 1986 & 1988 -- and their 4th overall (The won their first in 1972).

The Panthers are no strangers to playoff success, they won three straight World Championships in the MWWL from 1982-1984 -- The only team to three-peat in the history of the league.

With all of the off-season moves by both the Detroit Stars and Mexico City Chihuahuas, it's not a surprise that they were the top two teams in the American League West. Detroit (106-56) edged Mexico City (104-58) by 2 games for the division title. The Stars won their 5th Division title, first in 4 years -- their 106 wins was the most since their peak-era late 70's teams, in which they won three straight divisions (1977-1979). They went to the World Series in 1978 & 1979 -- winning it all in 1978 over the Long Beach Titans. The Chihuahuas return to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus, and their best season in franchise history.

In the National League, the battles for the division titles were not anywhere as close as the American League teams. The Manhattan Gas Hornets won their third straight division title, by winning the N.L. East with a 111-51 record. The N.L. West was won by the Steel City Sluggers with a MWWL best record of 117-45. For the Sluggers, it was their second consecutive division title; Manhattan will be trying for their 2nd MWWL title in 3 years.

The race for the two National League Wild Cards is where the excitement was, as it came between three to four teams. In the end, the N.L. East's Valdosta Bombers (94-68) and N.L. West's Clovis Cougars (93-69) moved on to the playoffs, as the Michigan Marauders (N.L. East) just missed out at 92-70 -- with the Germantown Grays further back at 83-79. The Cougars had their most successful season in their three-year history, improving each year.

There was six 100-game winners & six 100-game losers during the season.

On Stay-cation!

Didn't realize that it has been that long since my last post, but it's probably due to the fact that I have been on my week's paid-vacation, where did I go? Nowhere really, but that is absolutely fine in my book. I kicked it off Sunday morning, when I got off work.

The first night, Sunday night, was the Mid-West Winter League Draft for the 1989 MLB Season Players. For my blog followers that were wondering what has gone down since we left off, I plan to do an update on that sure enough, the season is indeed over. Not to tip things off, but I did draft late in the rounds. I didn't get to draft the studs that there was in the top 10 picks of the draft, we all know who went #1 overall for the 1989 MLB debuts though, and that would be Ken Griffey, Jr. (who else?). I drafted John Wettleland and Stan Belinda to go along with Doug Jones in my bullpen, I don't expect to win the division again. A couple teams in my division made some huge splashes in the off-season. But we'll continue this discussion in another post...

NOTHING... BUT NET

Jordan vs the Detroit Pistons.
We got plenty done around the house the last few days, and we got some cool deals at the video game store, 4 games for $52. I got NBA 2K12 for $3.99 Pre-owned, and there is nothing wrong with it, so I played away on it over Monday night, until Tuesday noon (LOL!) -- I don't really care for today's players, but I unlocked great teams of the past in the Chicago Bulls' teams of the 90's, the 89'-90' Detroit Pistons ("Bad Boys"), Bill Russell's Celtics, a couple Jerry West Lakers teams, the 87'-88 Los Angeles Lakers & the 85'-86' Boston Celtics. There was a few different Lakers & Bulls teams actually, they had the Bulls team from Micheal Jordan's rookie year (which was amusing), then one of their teams (that couldn't get past the Pistons) in the 88'-89' squad, and then the 90'-91' NBA Champions squad that actually did break through.

I actually can say, that I saw the moment the Chicago Bulls & Michael Jordan made the breakthrough live. I was hanging out with one of our closest neighborhood friends, when his mom got home & told us she got 5 tickets to Game 4 of the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. At the time, I lived in Waterford, which is not incredibly far from the Palace of Auburn Hills -- so we got to see history made, sure we were not happy to see the Pistons' reign end, but it was a bit of a foregone conclusion, the Bulls simply owned everyone that season, the Blazers & Lakers looked like they were the only ones capable of stopping Chicago that year. It was a cool memory that I will remember, as the fans exited the arena, people were chanting "Go L.A.!, Go L.A." which was weird since, we were all chanting "Beat L.A." two & three years before that. My brother had a blast though, because Jordan happened to be his favorite player.

Another thing people need to understand, is that the Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons rivalry at it's most ugliest, most heated, and best, could almost rival that of the Yankees & Red Sox. Then again, you can say that of the "Bad Boys" Pistons' rivalry with the Celtics, and Lakers. I loved the NBA then, to become the best, you had to simply climb a ladder, and beat the one above you. The Pistons had trouble with the Celtics, we finally got past them, then we just missed beating the Lakers in 1988, we finally do so in the 88'-89' season, while the Bulls were trying to get past the Pistons and the Pistons eliminated them three straight years from 1988-1990. Then finally the Bulls got past their hurdle, and the Bulls became a force to reckon with. Pistons fans have often wondered if we could have won as many as four NBA titles in a row, there was the 86'-87' team that watched them push Boston to 7-games, Adrian Dantley & Vinnie Johnson would collide heads for a loose ball, and there was Larry Bird intercepting Isiah Thomas' inbound pass that Bird delivered to Dennis Johnson. In 87'-88' conclusion, we finally get past the Celtics, and while Isiah put on a performance of a lifetime with a hurt ankle in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, he was not able to play the Lakers in Game 7. We would finally beat the Lakers with a sweep & repeat against the Blazers in 89'-90 season.

Rip City - Drexler, Buck Williamd, Porter, Duckworth & Kersey.
Speaking earlier of the Portland Blazers, they had the 91'-92' Blazers. Forgot about Drazen Petrovic and a young Cliff Robinson, on top of a team stacked with Jerome Kersey, Buck Williams, Terry Porter, Kevin Duckworth & the great Clyde "The Glide" Drexler. They almost had a team from each franchise, the other teams included a Philadelphia 76'ers team from the 70's, the 82'-83' 76'ers I want to say with Julius Erving & Moses Malone. By the way, saw Dr.J's last visit to Detroit in the Silverdome (at the time, it was the NBA's Biggest Attendance in NBA history). The 85'-86' Atlanta Hawks that had my favorite player on the team in Dominique Wilkins (with possibly the greatest nickname in ALL of sports - "The Human Highlight Film") lives up to his nickname, don't believe me? click his nickname or click this one as well - Wilkins vs Jordan in the 1988 Slam Dunk Contest -- which, I'm sorry Chicago fans, but Dominique got screwed on that double-hand windmill dunk of a 45 called (about 5 minutes into video).

The game also has the Pistol Pete - Hawks, Dikembe's Denver Nuggets, the 95'-96' Supersonics, the Utah Jazz of 1998, The Milwaukee Bucks headed by Oscar Robertson & Kareem, and a couple more.

CLEANING HOUSE

Did some cleaning around the house, and me being a pack-rat, it's not easy ditching old magazines. It's really cool to dig up the magazines, years later. I remember once in 2003, and Ichiro has been in the Majors for a few years at this point, I found a 1997 MLB Preview magazine (which had Albert Belle gracing the cover) and on the last couple pages of the magazine there was this writer writing about how Japanese players were going to invade the game & become commonplace, starting with this superstar named Ichiro Suzuki, and how he had a Micheal Jordan phenomenon that followed him in Japan. At the time, I was like anyone, I was like "yeah, right!" and then to find the magazine years later, and a writer predicting something almost 5 years in the future, is pretty cool stuff.

A time when Brady was just the other guy (#10), Henson on right (#7)

Another example of this was the 2001 NFL Preview magazine, I believe it was Sporting News, and it was previewing the New England Patriots. It talked about Drew Bledsoe's monster contract in the off-season, and how Bledsoe will try to lead them back to a Super Bowl, all in this huge paragraph. It then talked about the 2nd-string guy, and gave him a small paragraph, and then one dinky sentence for Brady, saying something on the lines at 3rd string - 2000 6th Round Draft Pick out of Michigan, nothing more. We all know the rest of the story, Brady takes over for an injured Bledsoe, and leads the team to win the Super Bowl over the St. Louis Rams who were called the "Greatest Show on Turf". I remember early in the season, my brother Jared, among many of his other crazy predictions that would come true, said Brady is going to be the next Montana and that the Patriots were going to win the Super Bowl that season -- In which I replied "Okay there, Sparky". You see, Sparky Anderson, despite his brilliance as an MLB Manager, he has made some really big statements on players, calling prospect Kirk Gibson, the next Mickey Mantle, and praising the likes of players like Torey Lovullo, to be future All-Stars one day... neither happened. But what did happen, is Jared predicting the future of Tom Brady, a guy that even the University of Michigan was not sold on, I mean hello? Drew Henson, remember him? The two-sport going-to-be superstar for the New York Yankees or Dallas Cowboys, neither happened there as well -- but it was Henson, not Brady, that Michigan fans thought would shine, it was Henson that split time with Brady at Michigan. I actually have Henson's Cowboys rookie card somewhere in my sports card boxes, somewhere. Henson was in the mix with Quincy Carter & Drew Bledsoe (acquired from Buffalo) -- while yet, another star we never saw coming in Tony Romo was on the horizon.

Just a few of the joys on relaxing, enjoying life & reflecting on life as a sports fan.

MWWL: Down the Stretch (Part II)

The Traverse City Tigers took the first three games in their 7-game series against the Cedar Park Bears -- extending their division lead to 4 games now. Cedar Park is still safe for the first wild card spot, as the Detroit Stars & the Mexico City Chihuahuas didn't make any strides as well.

Part I of "Down the Stretch" is now 3 months old (almost), so click on link below...

Due to many posts I need to work on my blog & need to get out, plus a busy schedule participating in one other league, running another league, I will try to make this post and other posts a little shorter -- yet, straight-to-the-point for the MWWL regular season.

What ended up taking place in the remainder of this series between Cedar Park left me shell-shocked.

Game 4
Bears' Hudler: Running wild in Game 4.

Like I said before, The Traverse City Tigers (in a key division series with the Cedar Park Bears) had a 3-0 series lead, improving our division lead to 4 games, time to finish this, once and for all.

Cedar Park: Not so fast.

For this game, I was sending Dave LaPoint to the mound, I picked him up prior to the All-Star Break in a trade, had a pretty decent year, good innings, Grade 9 (for BBW). Sending him against one of their best pitchers in Greg Swindell, overall I believe besides one game, we kind of took it to Swindell a couple times this season.

Rex Hudler would lead off the game with a single, he would continue to be a pain in my ass this game. He steals second. Andres Thomas would hit him in easily on a single, Thomas would end up scoring on a RBI double by Dwight Evans. Kirby Puckett with no outs, would score in Evans on a single. The Tigers would end the quick 3-0 strike eventually.

Hudler would hit a single in the 5th, steal second once again, and get knocked in my Andres Thomas for a 4-0 lead in the top of the 5th.

Tigers down 4-1 in the bottom of the 6th, with two runners on, Jesse Barfield smacks a clutch three-run homer of Swindell. Barfield has hit some good HR's late in this season, especially during times when we really needed a boost. At this moment, I'm thinking we are going to come back & rip the Bears' hearts out.

No, too much Rex Hudler, Hudler would go 4-for-5, with an RBI, 3 runs & doing his best Ty Cobb imitation by stealing 4 bases on the strong arm of Bob Boone. Every time Hudler was on base, Thomas was there to smack him in; Thomas went 3-for-5, with 3 ribbies. Cedar Park would tack on a few more runs, as Swindell settled back down after the brief, rough 6th inning for the complete 7-4 game victory, he wasn't exactly sharp, allowing 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 earned runs, while striking out only two Tigers.

Game 5

The good news is that I didn't have to deal with Hudler, the Bears were giving him a well-deserved day off. The Bears strike first once again, this time in the top of 1st, the Bears had runners on 1st & 3rd. Randy Bush would hit in his real-life Twinkie teammate in Kirby Puckett to score, the Tigers would get out of a potential mess, that would just be 1-0.

Ernie Riles would tie it up for the Tigers with a two-out solo HR off of John Cerutti. Really loved the pick-up of Riles during the season, he has been a huge lift either coming off the bench or spot-starting for Paul Molitor, or placing him at short or second from time to time. Plus he only cost me a 7th Round pick in a weak up-coming 1989 Draft.

Cerutti kept the Tigers in check.

The top of the 4th was annoying, because John Candelaria cruised through the first two batters for two outs, then comes a solo HR by Andres Thomas. Claudell Washington then slaps a sneaky single that had eyes, between Johnny Ray and Nick Esasky. Washington would steal second, that was another thing that drove me nuts the second half of this series, Bob Boone suddenly couldn't throw anyone out trying to steal (despite his +5 arm). Kirby Puckett would hit an RBI double to take 3-1 lead.

The top of 5th, Ernie Whitt would hit a solo HR for the Bears, for extra insurance, putting the lead to 4-1. The score would stick until bottom of the 9th, where T.C. threatened. Ernie Riles would hit a lead-off triple off of Alejandro Pena, Tim Raines would then draw a walk. No outs, runners on 1st & 3rd, Marty Barrett would hit a sac fly that scores in Riles. Raines would advance to second on the fly. After that, Paul Molitor (who's been clutch all year) would pop up, while Ron Hassey who has had some good late hits from time to time, would ground it to short for final out.

Bears have bounced back with two consecutive victories. Bears win 4-2 in this one. John Cerutti held the Tigers down, with only 3 hits & a walk in 8 innings, allowing a runs, including 4 K's.

Game 6
4 RBI during Game 6 of the series vs. T.C.

Bob Knepper takes the mound for Traverse City, he faces Mike Boddicker. The Tigers took the first three games, only to lose the next two as the Cedar Park Bears try to even up the series.

The Bears kicked off the game on the right note, as Rex Hudler leads off with a homerun to left, off of Knepper. The Tigers bounce back in the bottom of the second, Paul Molitor scores from third on a passed ball. Molitor reached first originally on a throwing error by Ron Gant, then stole second, and tagged up advancing to third on a fly to right by Bob Boone.

Speed kills, or at least in this case Hudler is the one doing the killing. Hudler laces a single to kick off the inning, he then would steal successfully off of Boone's strong arm. Hudler gives Cedar Park the lead, on Andres Thomas' ground out to short.

Hudler would continue to frustrate me with yet another four steal performance. After reaching safe on a error by the Tigers' shortstop Rafael Ramirez, Hudler once again stole 2nd & 3rd base, matching his Game 4 performance of 4 steals in a single-game. Hudler would eventually score again this time on a sac fly by Andres Thomas towards the left-field gap, taking a 3-1 early lead.

Thomas would play a bigger role by smacking a two-run HR off of Juan Agosto (making it a 4 RBI performance) during the top of the ninth, as the Bears would eventually win the game 6-3, as the Bears even up the series 3-3.

Game 7

Cedar Park scores 4 quick runs in the top of the first. Down 4-2, Dwight Evans would smack a three-run HR off of Greg Maddux in the 7th Inning. Maddux didn't have his "A" game, and would go 6.2 innings, allowing 8 earned runs on 11 hits. Mike Moore wins his 16th game of the season, improving his ERA to 2.81 on 7 innings of work (allowing two runs).

Tigers fans leave for the parking lots stunned as the Bears take the series (4-3) after a 0-3 series deficit, and are deadlocked in a division tie for first.

MWWL: Down the Stretch (Part I)

Hello Mid-West Winter League fans!

It's been a little bit since I last reported on the season, so let me catch you up. The two teams will not play each other again for the remainder of the regular season. Mexico City is within striking distance of the wildcard hunt, fighting for that last spot with the Detroit Stars.

Late that night the Cedar Park Bears pulled into Traverse City to play them the next day on September 16th. The Tigers currently lead by one game over the Bears. This could be a series, that could determine everything for these two teams.

Game #142 (Game #144 for CPB) at TRAVERSE CITY

Game 1

Mike Boddicker (CPB) faces off against Greg Maddux of the Tigers.

Claudell Washington hits an RBI single for the Bears to draw first blood in the first; Tigers answer back with RBI double by Pete O'Brien in the bottom half of the 3rd Inning, tied 1-1.

Luis Polonia for Cedar Park reaches on a single, then steals second with no outs during the top of the 8th. Lenny Harris hits a ball past a diving Marty Barrett, Polonia would round third & score. The Bears now lead 2-1. During the bottom half of the 8th, the Tigers would once again tie it up -- this one a blast by Pete O'Brien over the center field wall, O'Brien once again comes through. O'Brien was one of the Tigers' in-season acquisitions this season.

This one goes to extras, with Rick Honeycutt on the mound for Cedar Park -- the Tigers' Paul Molitor hits a hot smash towards Lenny Harris, Harris scoops it up, the long throw, Will Clark gets it on one hop, but bobbles it -- he's safe, and they record this one as a single. Pete O'Brien steps up to the plate he's been clutch all game, Molitor bluffs stealing, and O'Brien draws ball four. Runners now on 1st & 2nd. Tim Raines comes up to the plate, and smacks a single off of Honeycutt's leg, everyone is safe, bases loaded! Cedar Park changes pitchers, goes with Chuck Crim, who is sporting a 2.17 ERA through 66 innings of work, this season. Joe Carter who came in as a defensive replacement in right field comes up for his first plate appearance for the night. Crim delivers and it just misses the outside corner, he walks in the winning run, can you believe it?!

Bears fans got to be sick to their stomachs after this one, as the Tigers make it a two-game division lead now.

FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 3, Cedar Park 2 (10 Innings)

GAME 2

The Cedar Park Bears send Mike Moore up to face Jose Rijo of the Tigers.

Jose Rijo kept the Bears off the board with seven good & effective, scoreless innings, he allowed 7 hits & two walks, striking out only three batters.

Tim Raines would reach on a walk in the bottom of the 1st, Pete O'Brien keeps up the good work this series by hitting a single to right, moving Raines to third. Raines would score off Dave Winfield's deep sacrifice fly.

After a double by Ernie Riles in the bottom of the 2nd, Rafael Ramirez would add to the Tigers' lead with RBI single. 2-0, Tigers after two.

Ramirez would also contribute with a RBI triple later in the game, as Cedar Park just couldn't get their players across home plate.

FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 4, Cedar Park 0

GAME 3

Tigers win on walk-off double by Paul Molitor in extras, scoring in Mookie Wilson off of Chuck Crim (once again). Charlie Hough pitched 10 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, yet 8 walks! Hough did have 6 K's though.

FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 1, Cedar Park 0 (10 Innings)

Traverse City extends their division lead to 4 games now, can they keep it up, and finish off the Cedar Park now that they are down at the moment?

To be continued...

Traverse City Wins Series over Mexico City, 4-3

Game 6
T.C.'s nuisance: Cecil Fielder of Mexico City.

Dwight Gooden would hold down the Tigers for the most part in this one, facing off again Dave LaPoint who did his part in this game to keep T.C. in it.

Bottom of the 1st
Pete O'Brien hits a two-out solo HR to right, for early blood. Traverse City 1, Mexico City 0

Bottom of the 3rd
Pete O'Brien strikes again for the Tigers, this time hitting a single to right, moving Tim Raines into scoring position at third, Raines drew a one-out walk. Paul Molitor would hit a ball right back to the mound, which would ricochet off Gooden's glove, Raines scores, Gooden recovers the ball and throws it to first in time to get Molitor, O'Brien would move up to second, two outs. Bob Boone fails to do anything more for T.C. this inning has he flies to right for final out. Traverse City 2, Mexico City 0

Top of the 6th
Tony Fernandez smokes a liner to center that badly fooled Lance Johnson in center, and goes over his head, Fernandez makes it all the way to third, a big lead-off triple to start the inning for Mexico City, who have had no real luck against Dave LaPoint up to this point of the game. The Tigers believe they don't want anything to do with Barry Bonds, so they intentionally walk him to face Kevin Mitchell. LaPoint gets Mitchell to pop out behind first to Barrett, one out. Infield at double play depth, Kelly Gruber hits one hard to Molitor, Molitor will go to first, and that's two down, but a run scores as Bonds moves up to second. Cecil Fielder would line it to left, Raines had himself positioned perfectly, for the third out.
Traverse City 2, Mexico City 1

Juan Agosto would pitch two scoreless innings for the Tigers in relief, allowing only one hit, with one K.

Top of the 9th
The Tigers' bats could not give their pitching any extra insurance -- only 4 hits (2 of them by Pete O'Brien). The Tigers will go with their closer Doug Jones (33 Saves). Kevin Mitchell leads off by hitting a dribbler to the left of the mound, Rafael Ramirez runs over, picks it up and throws all in one motion, but the ball goes only about three feet! Mitchell is safe, on a error, E-6. Mexico City goes to their bench, and has the speedy Henry Cotto to pinch-run for Mitchell. Cotto ends up stealing base #23 for the season, on a strong throw by Bob Boone. No outs, the pitch to Kelly Gruber, and it's rocketed down the first base line, O'Brien knocks it down, Cotto makes it to third, as Gruber pulls into first safely! Cecil Fielder who continues to be a nuisance for the Tigers lines it hard to deep center, it's a tweener, it one-hops the wall, Barfield is up with it, Cotto scores, tie-game, Gruber is around third, the Tigers' O'Brien cuts off the throw and throws it to third & he's out. He decided to let the go-ahead run score for the trade of an out, the first out. This is Jones' 4th blown save of the season, he would settle down and get the next two batters.
Mexico City 3, Traverse City 2

Bottom of the 9th
The Chihuahuas stick with Dwight Gooden, he gets the first two outs. Jesse Barfield steps up to the plate, gives this ball a deep ride to the right field wall, Dykstra catches it, and that's it. Mexico City comes up big in the 9th, and once again plays spoiler! Cedar Park fans elsewhere have to be really excited about this, as Mexico City enters the last game of this series up 4 games-to-2.

Gooden records his 9th win, improving his record to 9-8, he had only 4 K's, but at the same time only allowed 4 hits in this complete-game victory.

FINAL SCORE: Mexico City 3, Traverse City 2

Game 7

Neither starting pitcher Bob Walk (Mexico City) or John Candelaria (Traverse City) would do their jobs in this one, as it's back & forth between both teams' lineups.

Mexico City had a 3-1 lead entering bottom of the 3rd, after a two-run HR by Harold Reynolds, Tigers would notch one in bottom of 3rd, and would load the bases & take the lead 5-3 in the 4th with a bunch of scattered hits.

Mexico City then reclaimed the lead with 4 runs in the top of the 6th (7-5), Tigers score two in bottom of 6th to tie, with Mexico City once again countering this time with 2 runs during the top of the 7th. I would report on a lot of this, but that's just it, not a game built on homers, but plenty of offense, the teams by the end of this game would combine for 26 hits (16 by Traverse City).

Molitor continues his 1988 heroics for T.C.

Bottom of the 9th
Tim Burke in to close out the game, up 9-7. Dave Winfield steps up & draws the walk, Burke is standing there as to be expecting a strikeout call instead. Tigers pinch-run Joe Carter for Winfield. Paul Molitor grounds out, moves Carter up to second, one away. Burke delivers the pitch to Mookie Wilson, and the ball is to the screen, it got past John Marzano behind the plate, Carter reaches third on the passed ball. Mookie hits one down the right field line, Carter scores easily, and Wilson will reach second on a double & RBI, down by one, with one out. Mexico City goes to the pen for Duane Ward (3.71 ERA). The Tigers call on Johnny Ray to pinch-hit for Ron Hassey, but he strikes out for out number two. The Tigers decide to yank Marty Barrett out for Ernest Riles to bat lefty against right Ward. Riles finds his pitch, hits this one down the right field line, Wilson is around third, their waving him in, the throw is coming to the plate, and he's in safe standing! Tie game for Tigers, 9-9! Rafael Ramirez steps up to the plate, and Ward throws it over the catcher's head, Riles is to second on the wild pitch, the winning run is on second base. Now Mexico City has decided to intentionally walk Ramirez, to face the weak-hitting Lance Johnson. Tigers go to the bench for Jesse Barfield instead, comes to the plate, the pitch by Ward, Barfield turns the ball around, Phil Bradley in center is giving chase, really stretches to snag this one, with most of the ball still showing in his glove -- he really had to reach over his shoulder for that one, big athletic display by Bradley, we'll see that one in the highlight reels, a good run by Bradley as well. This one is knotted up & going to extras...
Traverse City 9, Mexico City 9

Top of the 10th
Brian Holton for the Tigers sends the Chihuahuas down 1-2-3 in order, making it a strong 3.1 innings in relief for T.C.

Bottom of the 10th
Duane Ward still in there for Mexico City, sets up, delivers, it's a base hit to right field for Tim Raines -- Raines' second hit of the game, he has been hit in two times by his teammates. Pete O'Brien hits a soft liner that lands in the gap, Raines rounds second & slides in ahead of the throw, no outs. Mexico City goes to the bullpen and calls on Jose Alvarez -- Alvarez enters with a stingy 1.57 ERA. Alvarez will face off against Joe Carter, the pitch, he draws a walk... no wait, it caught the outside corner, Carter can't believe it, one out. Paul Molitor comes to the plate, Molitor sends a blooper just over Tony Fernandez's glove, Carter is well around third, and this will do it! Tigers win in extras, 10-9! Walk-off single by Molitor.

FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 10, Mexico City 9 (10 Innings)

SERIES: Mexico City defeats Traverse City, 4-3.

Close Series Continues / MEX vs TCT

Game 3
Mexico City's Harold Reynolds.

Greg Maddux takes the mound for the Tigers with a 14-9 record & 3.06 ERA -- he'll face off against David Cone (16-7, 1.79 ERA).

Top of the 4th
In a game that has been the predictable pitcher's duel between Cone & Maddux, the Chihuahuas draw first blood, after Lenny Dykstra singled to right, Mexico City put the hit & run into play with Barry Bonds hitting one down the line to left, Dykstra would go on to make it all the way home. Kevin Mitchell hits a single past Ramirez at short, Bonds rounds third, but holds. Runners on the corners, no outs for Kelly Gruber, Maddux delivers it's grounded to the mound, Maddux goes to second for one out, the throw to first... not in time, as Bonds scores from third. Cecil Fielder up to the plate, the pitch, this one is going to left, Winfield gives chase, but he'll watch this one sail over the wall! Home Run for Cecil! The Tigers would eventually get out of the inning. Mexico City 4, Traverse City 0

Top of the 6th
Barry Bonds leads off with a single to left. With one out, Kelly Gruber hits it Ramirez, Ramirez bobbles it, throws quickly to first & Gruber is safe, as the ball gets by O'Brien at first, Bonds makes third, while Gruber has to settle at first. Maddux ends up loading the bases by walking Cecil Fielder. Tony Fernandez steps up, and hits one to the mound, as Maddux backhands it, Bonds is coming home, Maddux realizes he has it in his glove & comes home with it on the throw & gets the force, two down. Henry Cotto comes to the plate with the bases loaded, Maddux delivers, Cotto hits this one good, it could be trouble, heading towards center, Raines is after it, and makes the catch at the track. Nothing, but loud noise.

Bottom of the 7th
The Tigers pinch-hit Ron Hassey for Joey Meyer. Hassey draws a walk, Tigers pinch-run Lance Johnson for Hassey. Jesse Barfield hits the ball into the right corner, Johnson is hustling and wills score, as Barfield just gets under the tag, and makes it safe to third on a RBI triple. Paul Molitor comes in to hit for Ernest Riles. Molitor grounds out for final out.

Top of the 8th
Maddux is taken out for reliever Ken Dayley; Maddux pitched seven innings, he only has the mess of the 4th Inning on his hands, otherwise a good pitching performance from Maddux, 4 K's, while allowing 6 hits & a walk. With one out, Dayley then allows back-to-back walks to Kevin Mitchell & Kelly Gruber. Cecil Fielder pops out for out number two. Dayley then gives up an RBI single to Tony Fernandez. Brian Holton comes in to help get the Tigers out of the inning. Mexico City 5, Traverse City 1

Top of the 9th
The Chihuahuas add an insurance run, after Harold Reynolds' triple, Lenny Dykstra hits a deep infield single to score in Reynolds. Mexico City 6, Traverse City 1

Bottom of the 9th
Hipolito Pena comes in to relieve Cone, he would allow a two-out solo homer to Bob Boone, but it was a too little, too late for T.C., as Mexico City finishes the Tigers in this one with a strikeout of Nick Esasky.

FINAL SCORE: Mexico City 6, Traverse City 2

Game 4

Bob Knepper of the Tigers faced off against Sid Fernandez of Mexico City. Knepper's season has been coasting slowly after this season's hot start for him.

Top of the 4th
Kevin Mitchell hits a lead-off single to left. Bob Knepper strikes out Kelly Gruber next. Dave Bergman comes up & bangs a single to center, it ends up rolling between the center fielder Lance Johnson's legs, Mitchell is digging & makes it home -- the relay throw from Johnson is wide by a good ten feet, as Bergman has to hold first, Johnson picks up an error. Mexico City 1, Traverse City 0

Bottom of the 6th
The Tigers' Ernest Riles hits a one-out double into the right field corner. Mookie Wilson hits a hard ball towards Reynolds at second, but all Reynolds could do was wave at it, Riles trucks around third & scores, this one is tied! Mexico City 1, Traverse City 1

Bottom of the 9th
Sid Fernandez still in the game for Mexico City. Fernandez would issue a one-out walk to Paul Molitor, then a single to right to Bob Boone, putting runners on 1st & 2nd. Pete O'Brien comes up & fails to make contact as he strikes out, big K for Fernandez. Joe Carter would also fail by grounding out to second.
Bradley into his HR trot for Mex City.

Innings 10-13
Bullpens for both teams hold their own, Hipolito Pena (2.1 innings) & Duane Ward (1.2 innings) allow no scoring for the small dogs, while the Tigers' Luis Aquino came in at the start of the bottom of the ninth, and pitched 5 full innings by end of the 13th inning.

Top of the 14th
The Tigers stick with Aquino. Aquino would get Kelly Gruber to hit a grounder to Ray at second, for a ground out, one out. Dave Bergman would hit one to the left of Ray, Ray pegs it to first, that's two outs. Aquino faces Phil Bradley and pitches one that he would like to have back, curving by the left field pole, and it's gone, big HR by Bradley in the 14th, and that's it for Aquino in 5.2 innings of work (only allowing 3 hits). Ken Dayley comes in to get Howard Johnson to fly to center for the final out, but not before Bradley makes T.C. pay. Mexico City 2, Traverse City 1

Bottom of the 14th
Tim Burke closes the door on the Tigers. The Tigers' Dave Winfield hit a two-out double, but Rafael Ramirez would come up short at the plate by grounding it to short.

FINAL SCORE: Mexico City 2, Traverse City 1 (14 Innings)
Big Daddy leaving his mark on series.

Game 5

Old man Charlie Hough takes the mound for the Tigers, he will face off against the much-younger Jeff Russell of the Chihuahuas.

Bottom of the 3rd
Rafael Ramirez & Tim Raines kick off the inning with back-to-back singles. Russell would walk Mookie Wilson, loading up the bases, Russell is visibly upset with himself. Pete O'Brien comes up with no outs, and he earns an RBI the hard way by getting plunked. Dave Winfield was swinging hard for the fences, but ends up striking out, threat still very much alive. One out pitch to Paul Molitor, and he fights this one off as it was inside, and sails this one just out of reach of the first, Dykstra fields this one on the right field line, Raines scores, Mookies around third, the throw comes in and he scores as well -- two-run single for Molitor, as O'Brien holds at second. Ron Hassey hits a single just past Fernandez at short & has the bases juiced once again. Marty Barrett hits a fly to center, but it was not far enough to tag up. Lance Johnson would ground out to second for the final out. Traverse City 3, Mexico City 0

Top of the 4th
A lead-off walk to Barry Bonds issued by Charlie Hough. Kevin Mitchell strikes out against Hough. Kelly Gruber hits a sharp ball at Rafael Ramirez which handcuffs him, only play is at first, Bonds moves up to second. Cecil Fielder hits a single to left, Bonds trucks around third and goes for home, the throw & he's safe, as Mexico City gets on the board. Traverse City 3, Mexico City 1

Charlie Hough pitches a solid game, goes 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 ER, two walks, with 5 K's. Juan Agosto would hold down the fort in the 8th, setting things up for the closer Doug Jones who has 32 saves.

Top of the 9th
Doug Jones walks the lead-off man in Barry Bonds. Kevin Mitchell hits a grounder to deep first at O'Brien, O'Brien throws it to Jones covering first for the first out, as Bonds advances to second. Jones delivers the pitch to Kelly Gruber, Gruber lines it to left, it lands in front of Mookie Wilson, Bonds is rounding third, the throw comes in to Riles covering third, and Bonds holds. Runners on the corners, with one out as Jones will have to face the big boy, Cecil Fielder. Fielder gets a pitch he likes, and lines it down the left field line, Bonds will score, Gruber is rounding second & holds; Jones not his usual unstoppable self tonight, and has not made it easy on himself as he now faces Lenny Dykstra. Dykstra hits a fly to center, Johnson runs in on it, makes the catch, the runners momentarily look as if they would tag up, but hold. Two down, and stepping up to the plate for the Chihuahuas is Phil Bradley, last night's extra-innings hero -- Can he do it again? Jones comes with the pitch, and big swing & miss by Bradley, that's a strikeout & the game for Doug Jones and the Traverse City Tigers.

Ron Hassey has 3 hits for the Tigers, while Cecil Fielder had 3 hits & 2 RBI for Mexico City.

FINAL SCORE: Traverse City 3, Mexico City 2

MEXICO CITY leads 3-2 in series.

Tigers, Small Dogs -- Split First Two

The Tigers enter the series with a first place lead in the A.L. West with a 83-51 record, they will be playing one of their division rivals in the Mexico City Chihuahuas, who are just keeping their heads over .500 with a 67-66 record (15.5 games back) in 4th place.

GAME 1

Tigers send Eric King to the mound to start, he has been spending most of his days in the pen lately, he enters with a 5-3 record, 4.10 ERA with 7 GS's this season -- while he'll face Danny Darwin (5-5, 2.61 ERA, 11 GS's) who also has done his fair share of spot starts & bullpen work.

Top of the 1st
Cotto collected 3 hits against Tigers.
Back-to-back singles by Harold Reynolds & Tony Fernandez has the visitors in business (runners on 1st & 3rd). Barry Bonds sends this one deep to center, it's a tweener, it's off the wall, Lance Johnson (playing center) picks the ball up, Reynolds scored easily, Fernandez is going home, the throw is cut off, as Bonds goes for third, the play at third & he's safe.. Bonds just kept running, a two-run triple to kick things off early for the Chihuahuas. King loses the count with Kevin Mitchell, free pass -- runners on the corners (again), and no outs. Kelly Gruber steps up to the plate, hits it to short, Ramirez bobbles for a second throws to second for the force, but the relay to first is not in time, Bonds scores. Mexico City is up 3-0, with only one out. Dave Bergman grounds it to Barrett at second, Barrett momentarily juggles it, only play at first, two down, Gruber moves up to second. Henry Cotto hits it to right, Joe Carter takes it on the bounce, throws for home to try to get Gruber, Cotto advances to second, both are safe! Jim Dwyer flies to shallow outfield, behind second, the shortstop Ramirez is there to make the final out of a long opening act.
Mexico City 4, Traverse City 0

Bottom of the 1st
Darwin walks the lead-off hitter in Lance Johnson. Tim Raines grounds out to a diving Harold Reynolds, whose only play was at first, Johnson moves up to second. Pete O'Brien hits one to deep center, almost clears the wall, bounces off the wall, Cotto is up with it, Johnson scores easily, while O'Brien pulls up with a double. Dave Winfield would ground out, followed by Paul Molitor flying out to left. Traverse City trails 4-1 to the Chihuahuas.

Innings 2-5
Eric King settled down for the Tigers, while the Tigers' lineup has only managed three hits through the first five innings. Barry Bonds & Tony Fernandez has two hits each, while Mexico City holds a 4-1 lead, with 7 hits.

Top of the 6th
With Eric King still in there for the Tigers, the Chihuahuas put up back-to-back singles to lead off the inning by Dave Bergman & Henry Cotto. The Tigers go to the pen, and want to give John Candelaria some work. Candelaria gets Jim Dwyer to bounce into a double-play, Bergman moves down to third. John Marzano hits a deep liner to right, that is snared by Joe Carter for the final out.

Bottom of the 6th
Dave Winfield draws a two-out walk, the Tigers go to the bench with Jesse Barfield pinch-running for Winfield. The Tigers have Barfield running with the pitch, as Paul Molitor pokes it to left, runners on the corners. Mexico City goes to the pen, Danny Darwin pitched 5.2 innings, one earned run so far.. on 4 hits, 2 K's & 2 walks (responsible for the runners) -- they go with Jeff Pico, a player I believed they picked up in a deal this season -- he'll face Joe Carter. The Tigers decide to go with Johnny Ray to give the team an advantage at the plate, the Tigers have the runners moving, and Ray fails to make contact, and has Barfield caught in a rundown for the final out -- huge break against for Mexico City.
Mexico City 4, Traverse City 1

Top of the 7th
Tigers take out Candelaria to give Jim Acker some work, hoping he can keep the Tigers in this one. Acker enters with a generous 7.94 ERA. They let him pitch 2/3 of an inning & elect to go with a southpaw to face Barry Bonds, they go with Juan Agosto.

Bottom of the 7th
Ron Hassey hits a one-out single to shallow left, Tigers elect to pinch-run Ernie Riles for the slow Hassey.
Rafael Ramirez hits into a fielder's choice, they get the lead runner at second, two down. Marty Barrett smacks one to left, lands in front of Jim Dwyer, he bobbles it, Ramirez decides to take advantage of Dwyer's weak & aging arm, only to get called out by inches at third -- apparently it was not weak enough. Tigers pay for their aggressiveness.

Top of the 8th
Lead-off walk by Kevin Mitchell, then steals second. Juan Agosto strikes out Kelly Gruber, but then allows a single to right by Dave Bergman. Tigers decide to make a change for Agosto with reliever Brian Holton. Holton enters with a 1.93 ERA in 60 innings of work this season, he has runners on the corners & will have to face Henry Cotto, with one out. Cotto hits a single to left-center, Mitchell scores easily, Bergman holds second.

Bottom of the 8th
One-out single by Tim Raines, Raines then steals second. One strike to the lefty Pete O'Brien, the pitch comes in, and O'Brien is way out in front - strike-out for Jeff Pico, two down. Pico delivers to Jesse Barfield, this one is hit to center, going.. going.. GONE! The Tigers are now in striking distance. Pico gets Paul Molitor to ground out to first, with Pico covering first on a throw by Bergman, just in time.
Mexico City 5, Traverse City 3

Top of the 9th
T.C.'s Brian Holton blows right through Mexico City, 1-2-3.

Bottom of the 9th
Mexico City calls on Tim Burke to close things out, Burke enters with 2.06 ERA, no saves. Jeff Pico exits by over-achieving for the most part, Tigers couldn't take advantage of him, only with Barfield's two-run homer, a total of two hits in 2.1 innings against him. Burke will have to face Johnny Ray first. Burke up with the pitch, and Ray flies out to Cotto in center, one down. Bob Boone flies to center as well, for second out. It's all up to Rafael Ramirez, the pitch comes in, it's grounded weakly to first, Bergman is up with it, runs to first for the easy out & that's the game

FINAL SCORE: Mexico City 5, Traverse City 3

GAME 2

Mexico City sends Bill Swift to the mound, he's 5-6 with a 4.87 ERA -- as he will be countered with the Jose Rijo, 9-5, 2.86 ERA, as Tigers look to even the series after missed opportunities last night.

Bottom of the 2nd
Lead-off single by Dave Winfield, a gapper to left. A swinging bunt by Joe Carter, moves Winfield to second, as Gruber gets Carter at first. Ron Hassey steps up & hits one up the middle, out of reach for Fernandez, Winfield rounds third, and decides to hold, runners on the corners. Ernie Riles hits one a fly into the left-center gap, caught by Bonds, and Winfield decides not to test Bonds' arm, just not deep enough. Marty Barrett hits one just over Fernandez's head, Winfield scores, runners on 1st & 2nd, two outs. The Chihuahuas get Lance Johnson to pop out for final out. Traverse City 1, Mexico City 0

Top of the 3rd
Henry Cotto hits a one-out single to deep short, just beats the throw from Ramirez; Cotto steals second. John Marzano grounds out to deep short, moving the runner up to third. Harold Reynolds hits a double to the right-center gap just over Joe Carter's glove, Cotto scores easily & ties this one up. Lenny Dykstra grounds it to Riles, Riles to first with the throw, and that ends the inning. Mexico City 1, Traverse City 1

Top of the 4th
Jose Rijo strikes out the side in Barry Bonds, Kevin Mitchell & Kelly Gruber.

Top of the 5th
Lead-off single to right for Dave Bergman. Tony Fernandez hits one up the middle, Ramirez gets to it, tries to flip it to second for the force, not in time, both runners are safe. A sacrifice bunt by Henry Cotto moves the runners up, Cotto was nearly safe on a high throw by third baseman Riles. A big strikeout by Jose Rijo that catches the corner on John Marzano, two down. Harold Reynolds pops it up to Barrett at second, to end the threat.

Top of the 6th
One-out double into the right-center gap that drops between Johnson & Carter for Barry Bonds. With two outs, and Bonds at third, Jose Rijo strikes out Kelly Gruber. Score remains knotted up at 1-1.

Bottom of the 6th
