No starting pitchers would end up with decisions from either team this series, and each game ended with the home team winning in a walk-off; both teams' runs totals would equal out evenly at zero by series' end as well. Dick McAuliffe added 2 more HR's (putting his total to 3 for the season) as Bill Freehan, also hit his third HR -- but the big HR would be the walk-off by Willie Horton at Tiger Stadium. 1962 Dodgers 14 16 1 F
Texas (3-1) / Los Angeles (1-3)

The Dodgers took it to Rangers' starting pitcher Jeff Fassero with 7 runs in the first inning, and they didn't look back as they win their first game of the season. Fassero, unfortunately had to stay in and eat up some innings due to the overworked Texas bullpen (during the first three games), he would allow 11 hits & 11 ER's, while walking 6 batters during 4 2/3 innings! Willie Davis & Tommy Davis of the Dodgers had four hits each.

SV- M.Thomas (1)
The Yankees held on to a late surge from the Cardinals (who scored 4 runs in the 8th & another in the 9th) to win their first game of the season. The 1927 Yankees are considered by many to be the best team in MLB history, but haven't played up to that par as of yet -- their pitching staff has a horrid 8.08 team ERA.

Philadelphia (3-1) / New York (1-3)

Wally Westlake's two-run triple was the big hit of the night for the Indians, who finally win their first game. Art Houtteman gets the win in relief, with a fantastic 6 inning start by aging Bob Feller. Carl Lundgren would end up getting a win, loss & save during this series for the Cubs. Jimmy Slagle had three hits for the Cubs in a losing effort.

Walt Weiss keeps playing well for the Braves, with an RBI triple. The "Big Red Machine" is having mechanic issues with their lousy .176 team batting average. Tony Perez is batting .308, HR & 2 RBI for the season (leading the Reds in all three categories).
R H E

1971 Athletics 11 17 0 F
Boston (3-1) / Oakland (1-3)
WP- Odom (1-0)
LP- Crutcher (0-1)
The Athletics woke up out of their slumber with a 7-run explosion during the first inning, smacking 4 HR's that inning alone. Reggie Jackson's first hit of the season was a solo shot (he would get 3 hits) and later in the inning, the fans were treated to back-to-back-to-back HR's by Dick Green, Curtis Blefary and starting pitcher Blue Moon Odom. Sal Bando would hit a 2-run HR later in the 4th inning (his 2nd HR of the season).

Pittsburgh (3-1) / Chicago (1-3)
WP- Danforth (1-0)
LP- Haddix (0-1)
Nemo Leibold who had a big triple for the 25' Senators today, was the hero for the 1917 White Sox as well -- with a 3-for-5 performance, 3B, 2B, steal & 2 RBI! The White Sox starting pitcher Dave Danforth kept the Pirates hitters at bay, with five innings of 1 ER ball, allowing six hits & 3 walks.

A sloppy 13 hits allowed win for Ray Burris (Expos); as both teams scored 9 of their combined 12 runs in the first inning alone. Andre Dawson had his best game of the season, 3-for-5, HR & 3 RBI -- while the Pirates' Roberto Clemente has been on fire, going 4-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI, while batting .588 for the season (10-for-17)!

APBA Stories Straight to the Heart
I was on the APBA Baseball Group on Facebook, when one of the guys Scott posted a wonderful story of him & his cousin at a Dodgers/Cubs game in 1973, it triggered other wonderful stories that I felt had to be shared on this blog -- Documented for other APBA fans to carry on.
Below is Scott's story and others that have contributed via Facebook...
Below is Scott's story and others that have contributed via Facebook...
- "One of my favorite APBA stories. My cousin (big Cubs fan) and I (big Dodgers fan) were in Dodger Stadium watching a Cubs-Dodgers game in 1973. Early in the game Randy Hundley stole second prompting my cousin to laugh and say, "That's great -- next year Hundley could have a 10." I laughed too and a few seconds later the two guys sitting in the row behind us tapped us on the shoulder and said, "Hey, do you guys play APBA?"
- "Similar event happen to me...I join a new softball team and I was on the bench and a pop up to the catcher and I spoke out 65 and my teammate turned to me and said 35 and we both laughed and became great friends and formed a league together and we had 5 other friends we taught them the game and we played for 5 years ,sad to say Dan passed away in 97 RIP Dan Werner and we have not played the league anymore. Dan's favorite player was Joe Morgan in the game,so we put it in dan's pocket, its his forever..."
- "This is as close to that as I can come. I was a cook at my Dads restaurant and I had a 1972 card of Reggie Jackson's and was going to take it to the printer to make blank cards and a waitress saw it and told me her boyfriend played APBA and he came to the rest. the next day and were friends for 30 years. He even got me on his slow pitch softball team where I played for 18 years."
- "Back in 86 I was at Memorial Stadium watching the final game of the season between the O's and Tigers. After the game, as the Tigers were boarding their team bus, I handed Darrell Evans his APBA card to sign and he said "Oh wow, I have 1s at 11 and 66, how many home runs have I hit in your replay?" I couldn't believe, not only that he'd heard of the game, but he recognized the significance of the numbers!"
- "I had Lance Parrish & Dave Winfield both sign their APBA Cards in 1991 and neither one knew what they were!! LOL"
- "In Detroit during batting practice. Dave Parker playing for the Oakland A's and was off to a bad start of the season. I talked to him early in BP and said to him "Your killing my APBA teams chances next year". He looked directly at me and said "Your APBA team, what about my next years salary"... I was afraid. LOL"
- "I was on night watch when I was in the military, by myself. To pass the 12 hours of nothingness, I would sometimes bring some APBA cards with me and play a couple of games. Once, the supervisor came in (he had never done that before), and I figured he would be mad. But.......he turned out to be an APBA fan, and we sat there and compared stats and different seasons we played. After that, he showed up all the time and we would play a few games."

Bostonia
So not to keep the post going with a sad note, I wanted to kind of continue my Boston trend towards a positive note at least. I decided to switch my profile pic & cover photo to that of Boston, a nod, a shout-out to Boston, that we are all with them during these troubling times. It also got me thinking about the time that I owned a Boston Red Sox cap.
For those that don't know me, I have been born and raised in Michigan -- and I love my Tigers, and I also happen to be an Atlanta Braves fan as well. I have, of course, owned ball-caps of these two franchises, but I have owned caps from other franchises as well.
First off with the Boston cap, I owned it maybe just prior to 2004's title season until about 2006 when I met the wife, I wore it because to me, it represented the "working man", a man getting by, making ends meet -- I thought of all the New Englanders, that year after year bled for the Boston Red Sox, despite year after year of dramatic disappointment by the team, I felt the working man's pulse; and that is why I wore a Boston cap. The wife loved how it looked on my head, and that also my last name also started with the letter "B" -- I got the hat with another hat for a 2 for $25 dollor deal, so I also got myself a Washington Nationals hat at the time. My wife would learn plenty of baseball from me in time, not having an ounce of baseball in her blood before me; she would learn about Fenway & the Red Sox, the curse, and she loves how Fenway looks, and she has always loved the idea of visiting Boston long before meeting me -- so she eventually got herself a Boston Red Sox hat as well.
I have probably 5 different Tiger hats at the moment, but below is a list of the ball-caps in my entire life I have owned, some are a bit surprising looking back:
- Baltimore Orioles - Bought it visiting my cousins in Maryland at the Baltimore Mall.
- Boston Red Sox
- Chicago White Sox - Shortly after they switched to black again with the classic Sox logo on their hats, never I would have imagined that I would really grow to hate these guys.
- Cleveland Indians - The team was starting to thrive with young talent in the early 90's, loved "Major League" the Movie, and always liked their uniforms.
- Detroit Tigers
- Atlanta Braves
- Florida Marlins
- Washington Nationals
- Los Angeles Dodgers - The Dodgers cap I owned was a darker blue, with a red trim around the white "LA" on the caps, got it at Dodgers Stadium with my best friend who loves his Dodgers -- it was a really nice hat, I believe I wore it out/got ruined -- one of my favorite hats.
- San Diego Padres - Probably the dullest hat I've ever owned, let me note that my favorite player was Tony Gwynn. One day I hope to own a Gwynn jersey, but which of the many horrible uniforms should I choose from?
I also like to note that my brother & I owned those hard plastic helmets of the old 80's Blue Jays and red Cardinals caps.

Pittsburgh (2-0) / St. Louis (0-2)
WP- Matlock (1-0)
LP- N.Potter (0-1)
Popeye Harris continued poking the ball into the outfield with 3 more hits, he is now 7-for-10 (6 singles), 2B, RBI & 3 runs during the first two contests in St.Louis, can he continue the ride as the teams charter the buses back to Pittsburgh? We'll have to see.
Judy Johnson added 3 hits & Oscar Charleston added 3 RBI, as the Crawfords supplied offense from numerous players throughout the lineup. The Browns' only bright blip came from a 2-run HR by their only notable "star", shortstop Vern Stephens.

1937 Yankees 2 2 0
1931 Athletics 4 7 1 F
N.Y. Yankees (1-1) / Philadelphia (1-1)
WP- Earnshaw (1-0)
LP- Chandler (0-1)
SV- Rommell (1)
Both of the Yankees' hits came in the 4th, and even though this game didn't go into the possible no-hit realm, it's fair to point out all the 2-hit & 1-hit games that have already taken place during the first two games of the "Crazy 48's" Season -- including Bill Jame's (of the 14' Braves) no-no against the 1971 Athletics. The 1944 Browns alone will probably get no-hit a few times before this thing is done in a few years. Then again, maybe not, you never know the way the dice are going to roll.
Anyways, back to the highlights, Red Ruffing also pitched a great game, allowing only 5 hits & a run through 7 innings, he also had 5 K's & a walk. Spud Chandler blown the save & ended up with the loss, with Jimmie Foxx's 2-run triple in the bottom of the 8th. Eddie Rommell came in for the save for the Athletics.

APBA Tournament Update (Ruth & Aaron Brackets)
The Polo Grounds in New York. |
I have done some series recaps, they can be seen on the APBA Tournament page of the blog, eventually I will do more recaps in that style (but they take so much time!). so here is how everything is looking so far.
For those that don't know, I started awhile back on a tournament of 64 teams (NCAA style), best-of-five series until The Final Four, which will be the best-of-seven! I did my best at doing the brackets and figuring out with formula's and taking input from critics in the baseball world on who the top teams and seeds would be.
So here is how everything is looking so far...
RUTH BRACKET
#1 1927 New York Yankees (A)
#16 1944 St. Louis Browns (A)

The 1904 Giants were up 2-0 in the series with a commanding lead 6-0 lead in Game 3, until the Dodgers scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th & won the game 10-6. The Dodgers would win Game 4 with a walk-off Home Run by Frank Howard in the 10th inning & would hold on at the Polo Grounds during a 14-inning Game 5 at the Polo Grounds.

#2 1975 Cincinnati Reds (N)
#15 1937 New York Giants (N)
The Cincinnati Reds actually found themselves on the ropes during Game 3 of this series, with the series tied 1-1, the Giants led 3-1 in the top of the 8th until Tony Perez tied it with a 2-run HR & Cesar Geronimo hit a solo HR to put the Reds ahead 4-3. The Giants would score twice in bottom of the 8th, and had the Reds to their final out in the 9th -- Reds trailing 5-4, with 2 outs, the Giants' Coffman walks Tony Perez, and George Foster hits a 2-run HR to take a 6-5 lead. George Foster's dice roll was a 22-0 (second column, roll again), 33-1 (Home Run). Game 4, Don Gullett pitched a Perfect Game into the 7th, allowed a walk, and his no-hitter & shutout was broken up in the 8th -- Reds win convincingly 9-1! Carl Hubbell for the Giants, had a rough series (2 losses) with 8 ER's allowed in 11.1 innings.
The winner of the RUTH Bracket will play the winner of the AARON bracket in the Final Four, which will be a best-of-seven series.
AARON BRACKET
#1 1912 New York Giants (N)
#16 1971 San Francisco Giants (N)
The 1912 Giants defeated the 71' Giants, 3-1 during their series. The 71' Giants only won Game 2, and that was a 12-inning battle in which Tito Fuentes set a tournament record, 6 hits in a single game! Games 3 & 4 were decided pretty easy with 8-3 & 8-2 victories. Christy Mathewson was lights out, 2 wins, 11 K's with only 8 hits & 3 ER's allowed in 17 innings.
The 1912 Giants will eventually play the winner in the...

#6 1929 Chicago Cubs (N)
#11 1968 Detroit Tigers (A)
The Chicago Cubs won the series 3-1, Tigers won Game 1 convincingly with a 8-1 victory, and were up 4-2 entering the bottom of the 8th in Chicago, when the bullpen had a meltdown in which the Cubs scored 7 runs -- which would be the deciding factor in the series.
