More action around the league for Game #2

                             R   H   E
1969 Orioles         6    6   1
2001 Mariners     3    4    0       F

Baltimore (1-1) / Seattle (1-1)

WP- McNally (1-0)
LP- Moyer (0-1)
SV- Reichert (1)

The Mariners' Jamie Moyer was on cruise control through 4 1/3 innings, until he had a hard time finding the plate with three walks & 3 doubles, including a 3-run double by Boog Powell that capped off a 6-run eruption during the top of the 5th -- the inning would be the difference. Bret Boone & Dan Wilson for the Mariners each homered.
Moore is having a great start for 42' Cards.

                             R   H   E
1927 Yankees      3    7    1
1942 Cardinals    9    11   0      F

N.Y. Yankees (0-2) / Cardinals (2-0)

WP- Beazley (1-0)
LP- Pennock (0-1)

Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig hit back-to-back HR's to tie the game during the top of the 6th, but the Yankees' pitching couldn't shut down the Cards' bats, that scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th & 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th. Terry Moore keeps truckin going 3-for-3, HR, 2 RBI's, while drawing a walk & scoring three times; as Stan "The Man" added a 3-run blast.

For Ruth, anytime I have played the 27' Yankees (the tournament + the 2 regular games), he has now hit a HR in each of his 5 games! He's targeting Ken Griffey, Jr.'s consecutive games streak of 8 games with at least a HR.

1917 White Sox   1    3   0

Chicago (0-2) / Pittsburgh (2-0)

WP- V.Law (1-0)
LP- Faber (0-1)
SV- Face (2)

Despite his 6 walks, Red Faber looked like he wanted to be the second pitcher of the day to throw a no-no, during the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs & Smokey Burgess on first, the Pirates elected to pinch-hit for Vern Law with Dick Schofield, who would lace a RBI double into the gap, which also ended up being the difference in the ballgame.

1940 Reds        1    6    1
1929 Cubs         4    7    0      F

WP- G.Bush (1-0)
LP- Derringer (0-1)
SV- Carlson (1)

INJURIES: Ival Goodman (40' CIN) - 3 Games.

Roger Hornsby & Hack Wilson was the core of their offense, with 5 hits combined of the Cubs' 7 hits. Hornsby's double in the bottom of the 8th, led to Hack Wilson's RBI triple. Wilson would score off of Rigg Stephenson's sac fly. The Reds' Bill Werber would contribute in a losing cause, 2-for-4 with a triple & run.

1946 Red Sox  4    9    1     F

N.Y. Giants (2-0) / Boston (0-2)

WP- Wiltse (1-0)
LP- Klinger (0-1)

Tex Hughson pitched a solid game of 6 innings, 0 ER/1 Run, 3 hits allowed while striking out 4 Giants -- but it still wasn't enough; the Red Sox relievers gave up a 4-1 lead entering the top of the 8th. Hooks Wiltse helped his relief cause with a 2-run double in the 9th off Bob Klinger.

                          R   H   E
1904 Giants      2    6    1
1953 Yankees   1    3    0       F

N.Y. Giants (2-0) / N.Y. Yankees (0-2)

WP- McGinnity (1-0)/ CG (1)
LP- Raschi (0-1)

John McGraws' two Giant teams (04' & 12') are now combined (4-0) in this early season, as Joe McGinnity, despite his 5 walks issued, shut down Yankees bats, allowing only 3 hits. Mickey Mantle had two of those three hits (2 doubles) while smacking in the Yankees' only run. Giants' #8 hitter Frank Bowerman had a RBI single, making him 3-for-5 (.600) for the season; Bowerman in real-life batted .232 in 289 at-bats during 1904.
The Phillies will have to do without Maddox for awhile.

                         R   H   E
1977 Phillies     4    9    1
2002 Athletics  3    6    1        F

Philadelphia (2-0) / Oakland (0-2)

WP- L.Christenson (1-0)
LP- T.Hudson (0-1)
SV- Garber (1)

INJURIES: Garry Maddox (77' PHI) - 5 games.

The Phillies hang on, despite walking 8 Athletics hitters as a staff -- including a messy 8th Inning alone by Gene Garber of 4 walks (one intentional to Eric Chavez). Bad news for Phillies' fans as Garry Maddox is injured sliding into second base.

                          R   H   E
1995 Indians     0    2    1
1984 Tigers     10  17   0      F

Cleveland (0-2) / Detroit (2-0)

WP- Petry (1-0)
LP- De.Martinez (0-1)

Denny Martinez was all over the place as the Tigers' hitters were rolling on all cylinders! Kirk Gibson went 3-for-5 with a RBI triple & SB & DH-Darrell Evans was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI & run. Mark Clark (a APBA Grade D-Z) has been scoreless through 6 innings of relief now for the Indians through 2 games.

                        R   H   E
1975 Reds       0    2    1
1998 Braves    5    3    2      F

Cincinnati (1-1) / Atlanta (1-1)

WP- Glavine (1-0)/ CG(1)/ SHO (1)
LP- Norman (0-1)

Tom Glavine was all dialed in as the "Big Red Machine" was dealing with mechanic issues, pitching a 2-hit shutout with 6 K's & 5 walks. Andres Galarraga supplied breathing room with a Grand Slam in the bottom of the 3rd off of Fred Norman, it was Galarraga's 2nd HR of the season; Javy Lopez had a solo shot.

                          R   H   E
1998 Padres      4    8    2
1976 Dodgers   3    8    1       F

San Diego (1-1) / Los Angeles (1-1)

WP- An.Ashby (1-0)
LP- Rau (0-1)
SV- T.Hoffman (1)

The Dodgers' Doug Rau was cruising through seven innings (in fact both pitchers were scoreless through seven) until running into problems in the 8th, beginning with a walk to Ruben Rivera, followed up by a single from lead-off man Quilvio Veras & Lopes bobbling a sure-out grounder from Tony Gwynn. Rick Rhoden, who the Dodgers are using in the bullpen due to lack of innings, couldn't stop the problems arising as Greg Vaughn's sac fly & Wally Joyner's 2-run single put the Padres in front, 3-0. Ron Cey's 2-run HR in the 8th & Lee Lacy's solo in the bottom of the ninth couldn't put the Dodgers on top. Veras (SD) went 3-for-5, 2B & ribbie.
Kling leads 06' Cubs to victory.

1906 Cubs       3    5    1

Chicago (2-0) / Cleveland (0-2)

WP- J.Taylor (1-0)
LP- E.Wynn (0-1)
SV- Lundgren (1)

It's good to be Kling! The Cubs' catcher Johnny Kling was responsible for all 3 RBI's in the Cubs 3-2 victory in Cleveland. The 29' Cubs & 06' Cubs are now combined 4-0, as the Tribe (54' & 95') early on, are a combined 0-4! Bobby Avila went 2-for-4 for the Indians, with a 2B, steal, RBI & run.

                             R   H   E
1935 Crawfords   8   15   0
1944 Browns        2    3    0      F

Pittsburgh (2-0) / St. Louis (0-2)

WP- Matlock (1-0)
LP- N.Potter (0-1)

Popeye Harris continued poking the ball into the outfield with 3 more hits, he is now 7-for-10 (6 singles), 2B, RBI & 3 runs during the first two contests in St.Louis, can he continue the ride as the teams charter the buses back to Pittsburgh? We'll have to see.

Judy Johnson added 3 hits & Oscar Charleston added 3 RBI, as the Crawfords supplied offense from numerous players throughout the lineup. The Browns' only bright blip came from a 2-run HR by their only notable "star", shortstop Vern Stephens.

                            R   H   E
1937 Yankees     2    2    0
1931 Athletics     4    7    1      F

N.Y. Yankees (1-1) / Philadelphia (1-1)

WP- Earnshaw (1-0)
LP- Chandler (0-1)
SV- Rommell (1)

Both of the Yankees' hits came in the 4th, and even though this game didn't go into the possible no-hit realm, it's fair to point out all the 2-hit & 1-hit games that have already taken place during the first two games of the "Crazy 48's" Season -- including Bill Jame's (of the 14' Braves) no-no against the 1971 Athletics. The 1944 Browns alone will probably get no-hit a few times before this thing is done in a few years. Then again, maybe not, you never know the way the dice are going to roll.

Anyways, back to the highlights, Red Ruffing also pitched a great game, allowing only 5 hits & a run through 7 innings, he also had 5 K's & a walk. Spud Chandler blown the save & ended up with the loss, with Jimmie Foxx's 2-run triple in the bottom of the 8th. Eddie Rommell came in for the save for the Athletics.
