(Game #17's)

Shoeless: Big Game vs. Phillies.

1935 Crawfords   3    5    1
1971 Pirates        1    4    2     F

Crawfords (16-1) / Pirates (7-10)

WP- Paige (5-0)/ CG(5)
LP- Blass (1-3)

In a battle between two teams from Pittsburgh, the Crawfords go on to their 13th consecutive win without their big stud Josh Gibson. Gibson got injured in the last game of their series against the 1971 San Francisco Giants and will be out for a big chunk of 34 games. Satchel Paige was once again brilliant, and has gone the distance every time he has started a game. Roberto Clemente broke up Paige's shutout with a solo HR during the bottom of the ninth.

1937 Yankees     8   14   0
1999 Rangers     3    7    1    F

New York (8-9) / Texas (9-8)

WP- L.Gomez (3-1)/ CG (1)
LP- Helling (2-2)

Bill Dickey led the Bombers, going 3-for-5, a double & 4 RBI, while Lefty Gomez gets his first complete game of the season. Rafael Palmerio hit his 9th HR of the season in the Rangers' loss.

1906 Cubs          0    3    1
1976 Dodgers    1    4    0    F

Chicago (11-6) / Los Angeles (8-9)

WP- Rhoden (2-1)
LP- Mo.Brown (3-2)/ CG (4)

Both teams sitting a few of their starters, found their teams trying to scrape for hits. Dodgers' Henry Cruz got a key single (in which resulted to him advancing to second on a error by Jimmy Slagle in right field), he would steal third base -- Steve Yeager who was supposed to get the day off, came in to pinch-hit for Ellie Rodriguez, which resulted in a walk-off sacrifice fly for the up-and-down 1976 Dodgers.

1953 Yankees   0    2    1
1993 Giants       4    8    0    F

New York (10-7) / San Francisco (10-7)

WP- Swift (3-1)
LP- W.Ford (0-4)

Whitey Ford pitched better than most of his starts, but still allowed three runs & seven hits in six innings of work. Whitey Ford's record now stands at 0-4 with a 8.55 ERA; in his defense, the 53' Yankees simply didn't show up (or were suffering jet-lag from their flight from New York City). Barry Bonds hit a key three-run double in the bottom of the third.

1953 Dodgers   0    2    0
2002 Athletics   8   16   0    F

Brooklyn (9-8) / Oakland (5-12)

WP- Zito (2-3)/ CG (2)/ SHO (1)
LP- Erskine (4-1)

With the fact that the Athletics reeling from being swept by the 1971 A's & losing five straight games, you would have expected the other-way around with the Dodgers taking it to "Moneyball" with that big lineup of theirs -- not so much in this one. The Athletics got a much-needed victory with a three-run homer by Ray Durham & a two-run homer by the 2002 American League MVP Miguel Tejada. Barry Zito pitched masterfully with a two-hit shutout for Oakland, while the A's handed Carl Erskine his first loss of the season.

                             R   H   E
1917 White Sox   16  20  0
1977 Phillies          2    3   1     F

Chicago (11-6) / Philadelphia (11-6)

WP- Cicotte (2-2)/ CG (1)
LP- Carlton (2-2)

Steve Carlton entered the game with a 1.30 ERA (34 2/3 innings), while the White Sox came into town, facing a tough Philly crowd -- a tough day ahead for the "Black Sox"? Once again, another surprise as the White Sox fall short of two team records for a single game (17 runs & 22 hits). Carlton was all over the place, walking the first two batters in the game, then balking -- then went on to allow five consecutive hits in a five-run second inning. At the end of the day, Carlton allowed nine hits & nine runs, no K's & 2 walks in his shortest outing of the season (3 innings). Shoeless Joe Jackson had a big day, going 4-for-6, HR, 2B, 2 singles, a steal, 3 runs & four RBI's.

Eddie Cicotte started the season off rough in his first two starts, but has come around nicely in his last three to lower his ERA to 3.96, Carlton's jumped to 3.35.

Toronto (9-8) / St. Louis (7-10)

WP- Caster (1-2)
LP- Lamp (2-2)

Chet Laabs contributed in his first game back from the DL for the Browns with a key two-run double in bottom of the sixth inning. Milt Byrnes delivers a walk-off single to drive in Vern Stephens with the winning run off of Dennis Lamp.

1975 Reds           7    8    0
1931 Athletics     4    9    2    F

Cincinnati (11-6) / Philadelphia (9-8)

WP- Darcy (1-1)
LP- Mahaffey (1-2)
SV- Borbon (1)

The Philadelphia A's had a 4-1 lead on the Reds entering the top of the fifth, as the Reds' lineup awakened and scored four runs from the 5th-7th innings, before adding two more in the ninth. Dave Conception and Ken Griffey added key triples towards the Reds' success. Lefty Grove started the game for the Athletics, and is still searching for his first victory.
