Freehan, Tigers Take it to Cubs, 6-3

The Cubs couldn't take advantage of a rare Crawfords' loss to gain a game back in the standings, as the Tigers' bats were hot -- especially Bill Freehan's, who went 3-for-4, HR & 3 RBI. Freehan now has 9 HR's for the season, Mickey Stanley also added a two-run HR.




The 1968 Tigers and 1929 Cubs are no strangers as the Detroit Tigers met their demise in the APBA Tournament of Champions, losing to the Cubs 3 games to 1; This series is so far tied up 1-1.

Tom Glavine did everything in his power to get the victory in this one. On the pitching end, he allowed only 6 hits & 2 ER's in 8 innings, with 3 K's; on the hitting end, he went 3-for-3, 2B, BB, 2 runs & 2 RBI's. The Atlanta Braves scored five runs in the 2nd inning.

The Red Sox knocked Catfish Hunter out of the game early with a 6-run 3rd inning explosion, in which Hunter allowed nine hits & seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. Daisuke Matsuzaka became the first pitcher in the Crazy 48's to pitch at least two games now with at least 10 K's, Matsuzaka finished the game with 11 K's through 6 innings -- the same amount of K's when he set the record earlier in the season (a record that has been broken since, Kevin Brown owns mark with 13 K's).

J.D. Drew went 2-for-5, HR & double, plus 4 RBI; while Dave Duncan and Reggie Jackson each homered for the losing Athletics.

The Pirates were able to keep Albert Belle quiet in this one, allowing only two hits (a solo HR to Manny Ramirez). The Pirates got RBI's from Roberto Clemente's third inning double & Bill Mazeroski's second inning single.

INJURIES: Dave Bergman (DET) - 7 games.

"Seattle Bill" James was off his game against the Tigers, which resulted in his worst start (first loss) of the season. Chet Lemon hit his 3rd HR of the season, and drove his RBI total up to 15 now, while Howard Johnson went 3-for-3, 2B, 2 runs, 2 steals & RBI.

LP- Derringer (2-2)

David Bell hit a three-run HR, his 2nd HR in as many days; while Aaron Sele kept the Reds' bats in check, allowing only three hits & an earned run in six innings of work.

Bobby Bonds & Willie Mays both competed for cycles & fell short; Mays went 3-for-4, double, triple & single with two runs, a steal & RBI -- while Bonds went 3-for-4, HR, double, single, two runs, a steal & 4 RBI. Lou Gehrig & Babe Ruth combined for 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB's & 3 RBI's in a losing effort.

The Giants now have had two surprising victories & lead this series 2-0. The Giants trailed 6-4, during the 7th Inning stretch -- Bobby Bonds' two-run homer off of Wilcy Moore put the Giants ahead for good.

Andy Ashby joined Satchel Paige (Crawfords) and Jack Morris (Tigers) as the first pitchers to five wins. Ashby has had an excellent season with a 0.82 ERA in 33 innings -- as he pitched six scoreless innings against the Tribe. Early Wynn, despite his 3.22 ERA for the season, has found himself with a losing start in each of his five starts this season. Trevor Hoffman has had a save in each of the Padres' victories this season.
