The Cubs keep surprising with their starting pitchers, Sherriff Blake improved his record to 4-1, with a 2.53 ERA & 23 K's. The Cubs have four starting pitchers with more than 23 K's each, and three of their four starters also have an ERA lower than 2.53 (including Blake).

The Padres almost let the game get away from them, surrendering a 8th Inning lead of 9-2 to the Indians. The Tribe scored 6 runs during the last two innings, until Trevor Hoffman closed things out for his 11th save. Quilvio Veras hit a two-run HR in the fifth, while Greg Vaughn also had a two-run HR (for his 7th HR of the season).

Manny Ramirez hit the ball deep to short in the bottom of the 11th, in which the shortstop had no play at home as Kevin Youkilis scores the winning run. Julian Tavarez started for the Red Sox in the 4th slot (to give Curt Schilling a rest), pitching 5 2/3, 5 hits allowed, 1 ER, with 6 strikeouts.

INJURIES: Juan Berenguer (DET) - 11 games (2 starts)

Dave Rozema pitched 5 solid innings of shutout relief for the injured Berenguer (who only pitched 2/3 of an inning, until Hank Gowdy's line drive hit him). Doug Bair would blow a 7th inning, 3-2 lead as the Braves edge the Tigers. Chet Lemon, Johnny Grubb & Larry Herndon all hit solo HR's in the game.
