Jeter Leads the Way (Game #6 highlights)

Jeter leads the Yankees' hit parade in 9-5 victory.
I'm going to do the highlights in shorter parts, so that people will no longer have to scroll a mile down the article, just to get all 24 highlighted games. So highlights, should come more often... that's not to say that I might not go that route once in awhile with all 24 scores in one post, but I'm going to try to avoid that. Plus so much has happened even without the two no-hitters, for example the entire first series between 68' Tigers & 85' Blue Jays ended in walk-offs, the Mariners' bullpen has not allowed a single run in 21 innings of work, and the 1986 Mets have yet gotten a win.

So here is some more of the highlights...

                          R   H   E
1946 Red Sox   1    6    0
1929 Cubs         2    5    1    F

Boston (1-5) / Chicago (5-1)

WP- Carlson (1-1)
LP- Hughson (0-1)

The Red Sox & starting pitcher Tex Hughson seemed to be in control of a 1-0 game entering the bottom of the 9th, until Roger Hornsby hit a walk-off two-run HR to win the game. Hornsby is batting .462 with 3 HR's & 10 RBI for the season.

                          R   H   E
1912 Giants      0    3    0
1940 Reds        2    5    1    F

New York (3-3) / Cincinnati (3-3)

WP- Derringer (1-1)
LP- Marquard (0-1)
SV- Beggs (2)

The Reds scored their two runs in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Ernie Lombardi & a RBI double by Irv Goodman, in his first at-bat back from injury. Paul Derringer allowed only 2 hits in 8 innings of scoreless work, with 4 K's & 3 walks.

                          R   H   E
1912 Red Sox   3    7    0
1960 Pirates     1    3    0     F

Boston (4-2) / Pittsburgh (4-2)

WP- B.O'Brien (2-0)/ CG (2)
LP- V.Law (1-1)

The Red Sox tried to give Jake Stahl the day off, but Duffy Lewis's ejection over getting caught stealing & being the cleanup hitter, made the Red Sox place Stahl in the game to play first, as Clyde Engle moved from first to outfield to play Lewis's position. Stahl in his first at-bat up in the top of the fourth was the difference maker with an 2-run double, Lee Gardner would later add a RBI triple. The Pirates' Roberto Clemente was the lone run for Pitts with a solo HR in the 7th.

                          R   H   E
1953 Yankees   0    2    1
1914 Braves     9    9    0     F

New York (2-4) / Boston (5-1)

WP- B.James (2-0)/ CG (2)/ SHO (2)
LP- Raschi (0-2)

So how does "Seattle Bill" James follow up his no-hitter in his previous performance? With a two-hit shutout, he had much fewer K's this time though with 3, compared to 9 last time. This game's performance also makes it back-to-back shutouts on the 53' Yankees, in which Dick Rudolph pitched a 3-hit shutout the day before. Another note, the Braves' Butch Schmidt has already been hit by a pitch, a total of 4 times now in 6 games.

The Braves now have 3 shutouts & between Rudolph & James, the two pitchers are 4-0, allowing only 8 hits & 1 run in 34 innings, that's a 0.26 ERA with a .441 WHIP!

                         R   H   E
1998 Yankees  9   14   1
1976 Dodgers  5    8    2    F

New York (5-1) / Los Angeles (3-3)

WP- D.Wells (1-0)
LP- Rau (0-2)

Derek Jeter went 4-for-5, with 2 solo HR's for the Yankees, as Jorge Posada (after a day off) hit HR #4. Paul O'Neil & Bernie Williams also added HR's as well -- a total of 5 HR's for the Bombers.
