Pittsburgh (4-4) / Boston (6-2)

WP- R.Collins (1-0)
LP- Haddix (0-2)

The Pirates missed out on two big scoring opportunities, during the 6th & 8th innings. Dick Groat got on first after Harry Hooper dropped a fly ball for a fielding error, Roberto Clemente followed by getting plunked by a Ray Collins' fastball -- Dick Stuart stepped up to the plate and lined it straight to Steve Yerkes who then stepped on 2nd to double up Groat, throwing it to first baseman Jake Stahl to get late reacting Clemente at first base -- TRIPLE PLAY! The first one in league history.

During the 8th Inning with 2 outs, Roberto Clemente came up to bat with runners on 1st & 3rd, when Dick Groat decided to steal second base -- Bill Carrigan (pictured above) fired the ball down to second in which Heinie Wagner applied the tag -- OUT! It was not only a great day fielding for Carrigan, but with the bat as well, as he went a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI double in the bottom of the 4th, that would be play out to be the decisive factor.

Pee Wee Reese had his biggest game of the season, with 2 doubles & 3 RBI as the Dodgers come out of the series with a split; Clem Labine rebounded nicely from last game's blown save by closing out Chicago.

Bob Feller, allowed only 1 ER & 1 hit in five innings, as Larry Doby & Vic Wertz hit back to back RBI triples that made the difference, in the fourth inning. The Senators need to find answers to their lack of offense, many of the stars are struggling as the team is batting .197 -- despite that Sam Rice is batting .452 with 14 hits.

The final score was close, despite the fact that the Pirates had 12 more hits than the Jays -- then again only one of those 14 hits was an extra-base hit (double by Manny Sanguillen). Willie Upshaw had his second straight game with a HR (2), while Roberto Clemente keeps his hot hitting going, with 3 singles (15-for-32, with a .469 average). Luke Walker for the Bucs, allowed only two hits & one ER with 6.1 innings of work, as Dave Giusti closed things out.
