1912 Red Sox      0    1    0
1971 Athletics     1    4    0    F / 11 Inn

Boston (6-3) / Oakland (2-7)

WP- M.Grant (1-0)
LP- J.Wood (0-3) / CG (1)

Plenty of things happened in this game despite the fact the scoreboard says otherwise. Both pitchers "Smokey" Joe Wood (Red Sox) & Vida Blue (A's) were having horrible starts to the season; Wood entered the game with a 0-2 record & 12.60 ERA, while Blue was countering that with an 0-2 record himself, and a 9.82 ERA.

Both pitchers went head-to-head, in possibly the best performance (so far) between two pitchers in one game. Vida Blue was pitching a no-hitter, 2 outs into the 8th inning, then went on through 10 innings, while setting the league's single-game strikeout record with 12 strikeouts. Joe Wood, would stay in the whole game allowing only four hits in 10 2/3 innings with 6 strikeouts.

Wood's only mistake would be a walk-off HR to Reggie Jackson. Jackson gives Oakland only it's second victory to date-- maybe this is the lift that Oakland was looking for.

WP- Cone (2-0)
LP- McGregor (1-2)

INJURIES: G.Roenicke (BAL) - 12 Games.

Chuck Knoblauch momentarily broke out of his slump, and went 2-for-4, with a HR & 2 RBI's, as Paul O'Neill added a HR & double, 2 runs & 4 RBI.

Cincinnati (5-4) / Toronto (4-5)

WP- Nolan (3-0)
LP- Stieb (1-1)

It's hard to say what got into the Jay's Damaso Garcia (who entered the game 1-for-18), when he went 3-for-4, with 2 HR's, a double & 3 RBI while batting 9th in the order -- yet...it wasn't enough, as the Reds led by Tony Perez (3-for-4, HR, 2 doubles & RBI) won their 4th game in the last five.

1999 Rangers     6   11   0
1971 Giants        2    8    4      F

Texas (5-4) / San Francisco (3-6)

WP- Helling (1-1)
LP- G.Perry (0-2)

Rick Helling pitched an excellent game for the Rangers, that included 9 K's in 7 innings (5 hits allowed), while the Giants' hitters couldn't execute when they had chances. Roberto Kelly added a solo HR & Luis Alicea playing for the injured Todd Zeile hit a 2-run HR in the 6th that gave the Rangers a 5-1 lead & more breathing room.

For the Giants, who started the season 3-0, are now on a 6-game losing streak.

1953 Dodgers    4    7    0
1914 Braves      2    7    0    F

Brooklyn (4-5) / Boston (5-4)

WP- Erskine (3-0)
LP- Rudolph (2-1)
SV- Labine (2)

Carl Erskine was on cruise-control, until running into Joe Connolly in the bottom of the 9th, as Connolly smacked a 2-run HR to put the Braves on the board. Clem Labine, once again made things interesting by loading the bases with 2 outs; Boston elected to pinch-hit for pitcher Otto Hess with reliever Lefty Strand, in a strategic move by MGR George Stallings (for already using a number of relievers) and Strand being a good hitter as well -- the move didn't pay off as Strand flied out for the final out, and Labine has now got two consecutive saves after blowing a save against the 1917 White Sox.

1971 Pirates     9   16   1
1993 Phillies     4    7    1    F

Pittsburgh (4-5) / Philadelphia (3-6)

WP- Moose (1-0)
LP- Mason (0-2)

Reliever Roger Mason (of the Phillies) may need a mental break from the mound for a bit, as he had another rough outing, giving up a 3-run HR to the Bucs' pinch-hitter Milt May. The Phillies' Dave Hollins & Darren Daulton each had HR's in their loss.

1917 White Sox  4    6    0     F

Cleveland (4-5) / Chicago (4-5)

WP-Ri.Russell (2-0)
LP- Houtteman (1-1)

The White Sox win with a walk-off sac fly by Buck Weaver, knocking in Nemo Leibold. Shoeless Jackson also had a 2-run double in the game in the victory, as Rip Russell gets his 2nd victory in relief.

1946 Red Sox     0    3    0
1934 Cardinals   3    4    0    F

Boston (2-7) / St. Louis (4-5)

WP- D.Dean (2-0) / CG (2)/ SHO (2)
LP- Ferriss (0-3) / CG (1)

Another good pitcher's duel for the day, between the Red Sox' David Ferriss & the Cardinals' Dizzy Dean. For Dizzy Dean, it was a three-hit, shutout performance that included 9 strikeouts. Frankie Frisch hit a clutch 2-run double in the bottom of the 8th.

David Ferriss, now has an 0-3 record, despite the fact he had three productive outings, while posting a 3.68 ERA.
