(Game #14's)

1931 Athletics          6    8    1
1968 Tigers              4    6    1     F

Philadelphia (8-6) / Detroit (5-9)

WP- Earnshaw (3-0)
LP- Lolich (0-3)
SV- Rommel (4)

Both teams went scoreless for the first five innings, until Jimmy Dyke's two-run double during the top of the 6th for the Athletics. Max Bishop would help the A's score two more in the top of the 7th, with an RBI triple. The Tigers' Bill Freehan and Jim Northrup added home runs (Freehan's 7th, Northrup's 1st), as the Tigers find themselves 4 games back & just above the cellar-dwelling 1962 Dodgers in the division standings.

The Athletics also entered the game with three players (Cochrane, Al Simmons & Palmisamo) on the Disabled List -- that has been the most players for one team at one time. Luckily, for Manager Connie Mack, he does have plenty of players to plug into places.. even though he's not thrilled with Cochrane & Simmons missing from the lineup.

1912 Red Sox           5    6    0

Boston (10-4) / Philadelphia (10-4)

WP- B.O'Brien (4-0)
LP- L.Christenson (2-2)
SV- C.Hall (3)

Harry Hooper was on fire at the plate, falling a double short of the cycle -- going 3-for-3, BB, 3 RBI's & 3 runs, plus one steal... there's no argument who the player of the game was.  Mike Schmidt, on his first game back from missing one game due to a minor injury, hit his 2nd HR of the season in a losing effort.

Boston (8-6) / Kansas City (6-8)

WP- B.James (3-0)/ CG (3)
LP- Leonard (1-2)

Leslie Mann of the Braves, showed that he was da' man, by going 2-for-4, with a two-run HR & triple, as "Seattle Bill" James pitched his third complete game of the season. Clint Hurdle hits solo HR for K.C.

Boston (4-10) / Toronto (7-7)

WP- D.Alexander (2-0)
LP- Hughson (1-2)

Doyle Alexander (7 IP, 2 hits & 1 ER allowed) kept the Red Sox' bats quiet, as Rance Mulliniks (two doubles) and Garth Iorg (RBI double) benefited from having a few days off; Damaso Garcia has been hitting much better of late for the Jays at the bottom of the lineup, as he went 2-for-4, 2B & 2 RBI.

1998 Padres         5    9    1
1969 Mets            2    8     1     F

San Diego (7-7) / New York (5-9)

WP- Ashby (4-0)
LP- Koosman (0-3)
SV- Hoffman (7)

INJURIES: Tommie Agee (NYM) - 2 games.

Alan Ashby keeps cruising in the win column, with an ERA of 1.00 during 27 innings of work this season ---although it was his shortest outing of the season (5 IP, 5 hits & 1 ER allowed, 4 K's). The Padres' hitters made it easy for him as Chris Gomez hit a 3-run triple in the top of the 1st, that led to 5 runs for San Diego. The Mets lose Tommie Agee for the rest of the series.

1942 Cardinals       4   12   0
2001 Mariners        2    3    2    F

St. Louis (7-7) / Seattle (10-4)

WP- Beazley (2-1)
LP- Moyer (2-2)
SV- E.White (2)

INJURIES: Jaime Moyer (SEA) - 5 games / 1 GS

The Cardinals' hitters took Jamie Moyer of the Mariners out of the game, literally.. as Walker Cooper's line-drive up the middle injured Moyer. Eno Slaughter's two-run single in the 5th & Cooper's RBI double in the 7th paid dividends, while Stan "The Man" Musial did his thing, by going 3-for-5, two 2B's, a RBI & run. The M's only got production with Bret Boone's two-run HR in the 4th, that gave them a 2-1 lead at the time.

Joel Pineiro will likely pitch in Jamie Moyer's spot in the rotation, the next time through.
