The Dodgers trailed the Mariners early (after 2 Innings) 6-0, but rallied back to score 7 runs combined through the 3rd & 4th, plus 4 more runs -- the next three innings; the Mariners didn't go quietly, scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th & two runs in the bottom of the 8th. The Mariners' outstanding scoreless bullpen streak came to an end, after 27 1/3 innings without a run allowed, John Halama would allow two runs (one earned) in the 6th Inning.

The 1962 Dodgers did something similar to the 1904 Giants in the tournament, in which they rallied from 6-0 in Game 3 and won the game, in which they kept the series alive, and won out the series as well.

Game Link from the tournament below:

In that game, Willie Davis was the one to hit a Grand Slam, in this game against the Mariners -- it was Tommy Davis's Grand Slam. T.Davis would finish the game with 2 HR's, 3-for-4, with 6 RBI's & BB. Ichiro for the M's would reach base all five times with three singles & 2 BB's.

Ken Hill was in complete control, the four runs in the top of the ninth will mess up his stat-line, but he gave the Indians' bullpen a much needed break after their previous series with Detroit. The Indians are also pretty excited to see their lineup waking up, the past few games -- and this has been without Jim Thome & Sandy Alomar, Jr.; Thome returns next game for the Tribe, as Alomar will still be on the DL for another 12 games.

The Indians' Eddie Murray went 2-for-3, with a HR & double -- plus 3 RBI, while Pete LaCock (KC) came off the bench to rest some of the starters, to hit a 2-run HR.

Tony Gwynn, hitless in his first three games, has been rolling since (added two hits & RBI) & Wally Joyner went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. It was not a good day for Milt Wilcox, as he was all over the place, allowing 6 hits & 6 ER's while walking seven in 5 1/3 innings! The Tigers' bats tried their best to come back, but the damage was already done. Trevor Hoffman made things interesting, by walking the bases loaded, and then having to face Kirk Gibson (a master of the dramatics). Gibson would strike out.

The problem with most "deadball" teams, there was no such thing as a designated "Closer" for their teams, many of their starting pitchers would pitch the entire game for the most part. The 1906 Cubs have 6 starting pitchers actually with an abundance of innings, Orval Overall is being used as a reliever & occasional spot starter, and have been using Carl Lundgren as the closer.

Lundgren has a 1-2 record now, one save with a awful 11.12 ERA & 2.294 WHIP in 5.2 innings. His victory, was a game in which he blown -- which makes it 3 blown saves. He loaded the bases up, walked in the tying run, and Donn Clendenon hit a walk-off sac-fly to seal the deal as the 69' Mets win. Clendenon finished the day with 3 RBI's, with a 2-run triple in the bottom of the 6th.

Jeter Leads the Way (Game #6 highlights)

Jeter leads the Yankees' hit parade in 9-5 victory.
I'm going to do the highlights in shorter parts, so that people will no longer have to scroll a mile down the article, just to get all 24 highlighted games. So highlights, should come more often... that's not to say that I might not go that route once in awhile with all 24 scores in one post, but I'm going to try to avoid that. Plus so much has happened even without the two no-hitters, for example the entire first series between 68' Tigers & 85' Blue Jays ended in walk-offs, the Mariners' bullpen has not allowed a single run in 21 innings of work, and the 1986 Mets have yet gotten a win.

So here is some more of the highlights...

The Red Sox tried to give Jake Stahl the day off, but Duffy Lewis's ejection over getting caught stealing & being the cleanup hitter, made the Red Sox place Stahl in the game to play first, as Clyde Engle moved from first to outfield to play Lewis's position. Stahl in his first at-bat up in the top of the fourth was the difference maker with an 2-run double, Lee Gardner would later add a RBI triple. The Pirates' Roberto Clemente was the lone run for Pitts with a solo HR in the 7th.

So how does "Seattle Bill" James follow up his no-hitter in his previous performance? With a two-hit shutout, he had much fewer K's this time though with 3, compared to 9 last time. This game's performance also makes it back-to-back shutouts on the 53' Yankees, in which Dick Rudolph pitched a 3-hit shutout the day before. Another note, the Braves' Butch Schmidt has already been hit by a pitch, a total of 4 times now in 6 games.

The Braves now have 3 shutouts & between Rudolph & James, the two pitchers are 4-0, allowing only 8 hits & 1 run in 34 innings, that's a 0.26 ERA with a .441 WHIP!

Game #5's / Paige's No-Hitter

I took the last week off, the wife an I had a lot of important things to take care of, and I didn't want to get invested in APBA -- when I needed to have 100% focus elsewhere. Now that everything has been taken care of, I finished the last five games (of this batch of 24 games) during the night.

I forgot to mention it on the APBA Baseball Group, the other night, but it was mentioned on my Boys of Summer Facebook Page. On April 28th, Satchel Paige of the 1935 Crawfords no-hits the 1942 St.Louis Cardinals.

PAIGE NO-HITS MUSIAL & the 42' CARDINALS!

Satchel Paige of the 1935 Crawfords delivers the second no-hitter of the season. A few games ago, "Seattle Bill" James of the Boston Braves delivered the league's first-ever no-hitter. This is also now back-to-back record performances for Paige as well, after setting the strikeouts (single-game) record with 10 strikeouts, he now has delivered the league's second no-no. The amazing thing is that the 42' Cardinals have Hall of Fame outfielders Enos Slaughter & Stan Musial, plus Whitey Kurowski, Walker Cooper & Terry Moore.

  • John Wockenfuss - Was involved in one of the more famous trades (at least for Tiger fans) when he and Glenn Wilson were traded to the Phillies in exchange for Willie Hernandez & Dave Bergman, just prior to the Tigers' World Championship 1984 season.

Nicknames from the 71' Athletics

The guy committed suicide with a gun, and you have to use this as his nickname -- turns out, it was actually his nickname. Not making fun of suicide whatsoever, but kind of weird considering how everything turned out.
  • Don Mossi (54' Indians) - "Ears". This may go down as the meanest nickname someone could have been given, do you really have to point out that this guy had huge ears?! (Sorry, couldn't help myself with the caption)

  • Ossie Bluege (25' Senators) - this also could go in Strange Names.
  • Roger Peckinpaugh (25' Senators)
  • Bake McBride (77' Phillies)
  • Johnny Pesky (Red Sox) - Pesky's Pole wouldn't be named Pesky's Pole, if he happened to have a weird name like Nunamaker (Nunamaker's Pole? Yeah, kind of sucks).
Gates Brown of the 68' Tigers.
  • Milton Bradley & Coco Crisp
  • Norm Cash (Tigers)
  • Jimmie Foxx (Athletics & Red Sox HOF)
  • Rudy York (Red Sox & Tigers)
  • Mookie Wilson (86' Mets)

  • Boog Powell (Orioles)
